4 Culture of Respect Respect – to show regard for others – Show – behaviors and words – Regard – recognizing – Others – human beings

5 ASC Culture of Respect We agree to show respect for all with our words and actions that reflect that we recognize other people as human beings

6 How do we do that? Golden rule Treat others as you want to be treated

7 The Golden Rule Buddhism – Hurt not other in ways that you yourself would find hurtful Udana-Varga 5:18 Christianity – So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets. 14 Culture of Disrespect Consciously or unconsciously learned behaviors that show we do not care that other people are human beings We do not treat others as human beings that may be different …… but all human beings want respect

15 In the News Syrian Ambassador killed and rioting in Pakistan, Egypt, Syria, and Iran Video insulting the Prophet Mohammad Were you offended by the video? Would you be offended by an insult to something you hold sacred?

16 What happens when we do not… …. treat other human beings with respect Hurts others causing pain and suffering Devalues the person and their ideas Trivializes individuals accomplishments Causes us not to listen to them Excludes them from the team Wastes talent and time Energy spent earning the respect back Creates low morale for the subject and bystanders 10

18 Discrimination Discrimination – with our words or actions we treat certain individuals or groups differently – ASC Services – ASC Workplace

19 In the News Where is discrimination based on age generally accepted? Premium increase 50% to 100% if you add teenager to your car insurance.

22 Harassment Harassment – with our words or actions we make the workplace uncomfortable and hostile for individuals or groups

24 Harassment Some harassment is simply not understanding what is disrespectful to others who are different And some harassment is willful

25 Bullying A form of harassment - the willful, conscious desire to hurt another and put him/her under stress – Social alienation- Jokes – Gossiping- Name calling – Embarrassing others- Physical violence – Rumors – Threats – Taking personal items 20

26 Bullying Victims are often weaker or in a position of subordination Acts out only when others are not around Hiding their own inadequacies Research has shown are often abusers of family members

28 Culture of Disrespect Illegal Behavior (stereotyping, discriminating, harassment, bullying) that is based on race, gender, religion, national origin, age, sexual orientation, disability or martial status is illegal under state or federal law in the workplace ASC - it is all disrespect Does not need to be based on protected class

29 Illegal Harassment Asking for sexual favors in return for work privileges So severe or numerous that it has the effect of altering terms and conditions of the workplace Victims Perspective/ Reasonable person Unwelcomed

30 What is unacceptable at ASC? ASC Disrespectful Illegal Unwelcomed Change work conditions Based on protected criteria Severe/multiple occasions

31 Disrespect in the workplace.. Harassment which creates a hostile or offensive environment for members of one group ….a requirement that a man or woman run a gauntlet of abuse in return for the privilege of being allowed to work and make a living can be demeaning and disconcerting …..

32 Culture of respect We agree to show respect for all with our words and actions that reflect that we recognize other people as human beings Because we are diverse, respect may mean different things to different people

33 How do we learn about differences? Understand that differences exist Talking with your coworkers and really listening Being flexible to new ideas and ways of doing things Read articles or watch television programs that highlight other cultures

34 How to prevent disrespecting others Think before you speak – Will this offend someone? G-rated workplace Not everyone shares your attitudes and comfort levels Avoid negative comments about others – She is really stupid – He is strange 30

35 How to prevent disrespecting others Avoid spreading rumors and gossip Jokes – fun or play is never at the expense of someone else Nicknames should not be given

36 How to prevent disrespecting others Socialization in the workplace is normal; others are not: – Excessive displays of affection are not professional – Asking someone out ? – Discussing bedroom activities or personal hygiene at work

37 How to prevent disrespecting others Respect personal space; small work spaces Never assume touching is welcome Beware of offensive gestures – Remember other cultures interpret them differently

38 How to prevent disrespecting others Social Media as it affects the workplace Pictures – Defiling someones photo – Suggestive cartoons, calendars and other – Threats

39 What to do with disrespect? Disrespect based on the protect factors: race, gender, religion, national origin, age, sexual orientation, disability or martial status should be reported immediately to a manager, the Human Resources Manager or the Executive Director according the Non Discrimination Non Harassment Policy

40 Other Disrespect Address the person who is committing the disrespect because of non-protected factors – Pick a good time – Eliminate emotions – Be specific – Ask them to stop – Listen to the harassers response

41 Disrespect Dont wait to say something It does not go away; your reaction reinforces Green light to keep on

42 Other disrespect If the behavior continues or retaliation occurs when you confront non-protected disrespect please notify your manager, the Assistant Executive Director and the Executive Director.

43 I did not mean to disrespect you Accept their feelings Apologize for not understanding their point of view Agree not to do it again Do not repeat that behavior in the workplace

44 Responsibility We are all responsible for the reasonable perceptions of our own behavior

45 Responsibilities Responsibilities We are all responsible for establishing and maintaining respectful working relationships with coworkers and customers

46 Culture of Respect We agree to show respect for all with our words and actions that reflect that we recognize other people as human beings
