Matthew 22 Jesus Under Attack
2
Parable of Marriage Feast (vs.1-14) Vs 4: again- shows the love of God to continue to reach out Vs. 9: change in invitation (Gentiles are targeted) Vs. 10: bad and good (different levels of sinners but all are sinners) Vs. 11: God mingles with the guests- cant hide from Him
3
Marriage Feast Vs. 11-13: man didnt have a wedding garment – Commentators believe that the wealthy provided their wedding guests with the proper attire – This man came in with his own garments (own good deeds) – Is. 64:6: all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags – Is. 61:10: he hath clothed me with the garments of salvation, he hath covered me with the robe of righteousness – II Cor. 5:21: For he hath made him, who knew no sin, to be sin for us, that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.
4
Marriage Feast Vs. 12: man was speechless Vs. 13: man was cast into darkness and torment (hell is a real place)
5
Marriage Feast Vs. 14: many are called, few are chosen – Many are invited, but few accept the invitation – God must draw people (the chosen will accept) – Hard to understand but election and freewill are taught in Scripture – Ex. Was Jesus 100% man or 100% God? (Both!) – Ex. Who wrote the Bible? Man or God? (Both!) – I am the Door. By Me if any man enter in he shall be saved. (John 10:9) He hath chosen us in Him before the foundation of the world (Eph. 1:4)
6
Herodians Question Him Political group who supported/compromised with Rome (Herods power from Rome) Q: Should we pay our taxes to Caesar? (vs. 17) Trick question: – No answer: Jesus would be traitor to Rome, making Herodians mad – Yes answer: Jesus would be traitor to Israel and couldnt be the promised Messiah, making the Jews mad
7
Herodians Question Him Vs. 21: Jesus answers both Yes and No – A) pay Caesar what belongs to him (his image was on the coins) – B) honor God first (we were created in His image: Gen. 1:26) – Therefore, honor and obey the government which God has established but we owe our lives to God. Obey God first.
8
Sadducees Question Him Liberal, religious group who didnt believe in miracles, angels, resurrection (Acts 23:8) Only accepted the first 5 books of Moses Q: Who will be married to the woman in heaven? (trying to make a resurrection look foolish and impractical) – To them, death ended everything and made more sense
9
Sadducees Question Him Vs. 29: Jesus tells them they are ignorant and deceived: didnt know the Bible or Gods Power – 1) didnt know the Bible A) Purpose of marriage (Malachi 2:15: godly seed) – No marriage in heaven (vs 30) but we are like the angels…..not angels ourselves – No procreation – Why no marriage? There is no more sin or death for us to continue a godly seed
10
Sadducees Question Him – B) I am the God of Abraham…… (vs. 31) Not I was the God of ….. He is the God of the living, not of the dead 2) didnt know Gods power – God created from dust (Gen. 2:7) and can definitely raise from the dust
11
Pharisees Question Him Conservative, religious group that stressed laws and wanted Rome gone They documented some 613 commandments and thought nobody could keep them all. So they divided them up and said it was OK to disobey the lesser commandments
12
Pharisees Question Him Vs. 35-36 Q: Which is the greatest commandment? – How did Jesus interpret the Torah? – All Jews knew the right answer: Hear oh Israel: The Lord our God is one Lord. And thou shalt love the Lord they God with all thin heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might. (Deut 6:4-5)
13
Pharisees Question Him Vs. 37-40 Jesus answers them by giving the right answer and summarizing the 10 Commandments and the whole Bible – A) love God supremely – B) love your neighbor as yourself – They should have seen their need of a Savior from these two commandments.
14
Pharisees Question Him Jesus now questions them Vs. 42 What think ye of Christ? Whose son is He? Pharisees answer the Son of David They expected a man to come as Messiah They wanted to stone Jesus because He claimed to be God (John 10:30-33) Jesus went against the Deut. 6:4-5 verse that said that God was one One is echad (compound unity) not yachid (absolute unity)
15
Pharisees Question Him Vs. 43-45: Jesus uses Ps. 110:1 to show that He is the Messiah (He was called the Son of David by the people) David called his son, Lord The only way that is possible is if something unusual happened (Virgin Birth)
16
Conclusion Jesus answered all the questions correctly. He was the perfect lamb that was about to be slain on Passover. He had just been examined and found perfect. What do you think of Christ?
