Subject Who or what the sentence is about
The subject is the who/what is doing the action of the sentence Simple subject: one word Complete subject: simple subject + modifiers (adjectives, articles, etc.) The scary clown chased the frightened children around the party.

Ask: who or what verb Paul runs.
We read through the story during class. The students will cheer happily on the last day of school.

The predicate The predicate tells us about the subject. It includes a verb. Simple predicate: verb Transitive verb (vt): takes a direct object I like pizza. Intransitive verb (vi): does not take a direct object He walks quickly. Complete predicate: The verb + all modifiers

Prepositional phrase Can be part of the subject of predicate
Starts with a preposition (on, after, through…) Ends with a noun or pronoun Is labeled prep phr.
