3 HOW CAN YOU PREPARE? ►Do your best in every class ►Join clubs and activities ►Take core courses each year (Math, Science, English, Social Studies) ►Take advanced courses o World Language o Algebra o Honors courses

4 HOW CAN YOU PREPARE? ►These are the classes you will take ►Get more information from your counselor ►Take electives to explore your interests

5 ELECTIVES HELP YOU PREPARE ►Develop a skill (Band, orchestra, choir, art) ►Explore career interests (Woodshop, metal shop, web design, cooking) ►Prepare for high school (Writing, environmental science, world language)

6 ACTIVITIES HELP YOU PREPARE ►It’s great to participate! ►Join at least one school activity or team ►Clubs, sports, and activities help you: o Develop skills o Show commitment o Meet friends

7 PLAN AHEAD FOR HIGH SCHOOL ►In 8 th grade, plan for 9 th grade courses ►Plan high school courses based on your goals and school requirements ►Plan what you will do after graduation

8 ►Earn high school credit ►Meet standard on state tests ►Complete a Culminating Project ►Prepare a High School & Beyond Plan WHAT IS REQUIRED TO GRADUATE?

9 EARN HIGH SCHOOL CREDIT *Note: Districts may seek an extension to 2018 for some parts of the 2016 requirements.

10 ►High School Proficiency Exam (HSPE) – 10 th grade ►End-of-Course exams in Math (Algebra, Geometry) ►End-of-Course exam in Science (Biology) Beginning in 2012 MEET STANDARD ON STATE TESTS

13 ►Do more than the minimum! ►Take advanced and “dual credit” courses ►Take career prep classes to get hands-on experience MAKE THE MOST OF HIGH SCHOOL

14 ►Take as many math and science courses as you can ►Take honors courses ►Take Advanced Placement (AP) or International Baccalaureate (IB) classes ►Take classes that give college AND high school credit (dual credit) ADVANCED & DUAL CREDIT

15 ►CTE (Tech Prep) programs help students explore careers and prepare for skilled jobs ►Programs include: o Science, Technology, Engineering, Math (STEM) o Health Care o Culinary Arts o Computer Programming CAREER PREP (CTE PROGRAMS)
