GENERAL LAB SAFETY RULES

LABORATORY RESEARCH General Safety Rules RA’s are not permitted to enter any laboratory, workshop and store area without permission. RA’s are only permitted in laboratories for official research or during practical classes. Coats, bags and other personal belongings must NOT be taken into laboratories Lab coats should not be worn outside the laboratory or workshop. At the end of a research, all electronic and electrical equipment should be switched off (unless otherwise instructed). All hazardous materials or apparatus must be rendered safe, or disposed off, in the manner indicated by technical staff or by established procedures before leaving the laboratory. Eating, drinking and storing of food are strictly prohibited inside any laboratory

LABORATORY RESEARCH Access Fire doors must be closed at all times except for the fire doors that are designed to be open under normal conditions. All RA’s are given access card to enter the laboratory. Do not give your access card to other RA’s as we are all monitored by a CCTV. Carpet or electrical cords are not allowed to run under (through) the fire doors. All laboratory door exits, access to emergency equipment and passage ways must be kept clear of obstructions.

LABORATORY RESEARCH Housekeeping At the end of the workday in any laboratory all work areas, benches and sinks must be left in a clean and tidy condition. It is the user’s responsibility to clear up any mess after using the laboratory. Stacked materials should be in stable condition. No bottles, plastic containers or experiment materials are allowed to be kept under the benches, on the floor Laboratory benches should not be used as general storage area. Apparatus, glassware and/or chemicals not in use should be kept in proper storage area or in your designated cabinets. Disposal of waste should be done safely and promptly using the designated bins/containers. All radioactive, chemical and biological materials must be properly labelled and stored inside its designated cabinets.. All chemical bottles or containers must be capped with a proper cap or seal except when being used

LABORATORY RESEARCH General Workshop Behavior All users of laboratory should follow all instructions given by the staff / technician in charge. Do not use any equipment without proper training, usage instruction and authorization. Alternately, equipment may be used in the presence of a lecturer, supervisor or technician in charge. Do not conduct unauthorized experiments, activities or tasks in any of the workshops. Wear the lab coats, gloves, goggles, covered shoes when you are in the laboratory. RA’s must dressed appropriately in laboratory. Head scarves must be tucked in (under the clothes, lab coat or overall) and long hair should be tied back. Do not work on your own (especially at night/after office hours) as in the event of an emergency, there is no one around who is able to provide help.

LABORATORY RESEARCH Equipments/Machine Before operating any machine tools, be sure to know the method to operate its emergency stop device. Ask for assistance from the technician / staff in charge if unsure. Always give your full concentration to the job when operating a machine. Never leave the machine unattended, even if it is only for a few seconds or a few meters away or even overnight. Before operating any machine, make sure it is in good order and properly adjusted and lubricated. If not, report it to your supervisor or technician and do not use the machine. Before cleaning a machine, stop the machine and remove the plug to stop electrical supply (isolate it electrically). Machine cleaning should be done with proper training and direct supervision from the technician / staff in charge. Report the matter to your supervisor or technician in charge when the machine needs maintenance or repair.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and Equipment Laboratory Coats RA’s must wear appropriate laboratory coats in labs at all times. RA’s not in possession of a laboratory coat will NOT be allowed to work in these laboratories. Laboratory coats are not to be worn outside of the laboratories, especially in public areas such as canteen, tea room, staff rest area, reading rooms to avoid cross contamination. Eye Protection All persons must wear approved eye protection (safety glasses) at all times in the chemical laboratories. Gloves Gloves must be worn when handling chemicals or any hazardous materials. Be careful not to contaminate switches, handles, plugs and other equipment, door knobs, telephones when wearing protective gloves. Footwear All persons must wear proper closed-top shoes in all laboratories and workshops. Sandals and slippers are not allowed. Masks/Respirators Suitable masks / respirators must be worn whenever a process involving volatile chemicals or machine churn out dust particles. LABORATORY RESEARCH

Conclusion All standard operating procedures and safe practices must be followed at all times. Each laboratory usually has their own safety rules depending to the type of research activities that are being carried out. Exercising caution while working in laboratories will reduce accidents and injuries.
