3 Definitions …… Leadership is organising a group of people to achieve a common goal. The concept of serving is fundamental to the leadership role. A leader is somebody who is ready to serve and not be served Leadership is special compared to any other role because of its unique responsibility for people “Leadership is the process of social influence in which one person can enlist the aid and support of others in the accomplishment of a common task”(Chemers 1997) Leadership is influencing people — by providing purpose, direction, and motivation — while operating to accomplish the mission and improving the organization.

4 Leadership – A Means to an End or an End in Itself ? “A leader with vision has a clear, vivid picture of where to go, as well as a firm grasp on what success looks like and how to achieve it. But it is not enough to have vision, leaders must also share it and act upon it. Good leaders create a vision, articulate the vision, passionately own the vision and relentlessly drive it to completion” (Jack Welsh) “Action is the mark of a leader. A leader does not suffer ‘analysis paralysis’ but is always doing something in pursuit of the vision, inspiring other to do the same (HR world 2007) Good leaders are an enabling force helping people and organizations to perform and develop. It requires a sophisticated alignment to be achieved between people’s needs and the aims of the organization
