AUTOMOTIVE TELL TALE SIGNS / SYMBOLS AND THEIR MEANINGS @Autogurukul
2
Car dashboard warning lights - what do they mean? Modern cars are filled with electronics and packed with sensors to monitor how your vehicle is behaving. It’s important to know what car dashboard warning lights mean because you might be able to avoid a car breakdown or full-on failure.car breakdown So here's what the different yellow and red warning lights on your dashboard mean, why they come on, how urgent the problem is and what you should do when you see them. @Autogurukul

Car dashboard warning lights - what do they mean? The warning lights on your dashboard follow a traffic light colour system: RED - Danger to person or very serious damage to equipment immediate or imminent, and “hot” in climate control system or temperature indicators. Example: Brake fluid / air pressure YELLOW or AMBER - Caution, vehicle system malfunction, danger in vehicle likely, or other condition which may produce hazard in the longer term. Example: Failure anti-lock braking system. GREEN - Safe, normal operation of the vehicle system (except if blue or yellow is required by relevant annex) Example: Direction indicators lamps (Turn signals) BLUE - Main (driving, upper, high) beam tell-tale only, and “Cold” in climate control systems or temperature indicators. WHITE or - OTHER. Other operations where none of the above colours are appropriate. @Autogurukul

Warning Signs Battery Charge Warning Light Indicator light means that the car’s charging system is short of power or is not charging properly. It normally indicates a problem with the battery itself or the alternator. Engine Temperature Warning Light Indicator light means the engine temperature has exceeded normal limits. Check coolant level, fan operation, radiator cap, coolant leaks. @Autogurukul
13
Warning Signs Oil Pressure Warning Light Indicator light means loss of oil pressure, meaning lubrication is low or lost completely. Immediately check the oil level and pressure. Brake Warning Light Indicator light turns on when the handbrake is on. If it lit continuously, it means that hydraulic pressure has been lost in one side of the brake system or that the fluid level in the master cylinder is dangerously low (due to a leak somewhere in the brake system). @Autogurukul
14
Safety Symbols Transmission Temperature Indicator light means the engine temperature has exceeded normal limits. Check coolant level, fan operation, radiator cap, coolant leaks. Tire Pressure Warning Light Indicator light means the pressure is low in one of your tires.
15
Safety Symbols Traction Control Off Indicator light means that the vehicles TCS (traction control system) has been deactivated. Traction Control Light Indicator light turns on when the vehicle TCS (traction control system) is activated. @Autogurukul
16
Safety Symbols Steering Wheel Lock Indicator light means your steering wheel is locked and can not be moved. To turn off the steering lock, insert the key into the ignition and turn it to at least the first position while turning the steering wheel in either direction Trailer Tow Hitch Warning Indicator lights mean that the tow hitch is unlocked or that there’s an issue with the lighting system
17
Engine coolant temperature is too high. @Autogurukul
18
Engine oil pressure too low. @Autogurukul
19
Water detected in fuel. Notice to drain the water from the fuel filter assembly on a vehicle equipped with a diesel engine. @Autogurukul
20
Maintenance required. This usually means that the engine oil is scheduled to be changed or other routine service items replaced or checked. @Autogurukul
21
Malfunction indicator lamp (MIL), also called a check engine light. The light means the engine control computer has detected a fault. @Autogurukul
22
Charging system fault detected. @Autogurukul

24
Fault detected in the supplemental restraint (airbag) system. @Autogurukul
25
Fault detected in base brake system. @Autogurukul
26
Brake light bulb failure detected. @Autogurukul
27
Exterior light bulb failure detected. @Autogurukul
28
Worn brake pads or linings detected. @Autogurukul
29
Fault detected in antilock brake system. @Autogurukul
30

31
Door open or ajar. @Autogurukul
32
Windshield washer fluid low. @Autogurukul
33
Low fuel level. @Autogurukul
34
Headlights on. @Autogurukul
35
Low traction detected. Traction control system is functioning to restore traction (usually flashes when actively working to restore traction). @Autogurukul
36
Vehicle stability control system either off or working if flashing. @Autogurukul
37
Traction control system has been turned off. @Autogurukul
38
Indicates that the cruise control is on and able to maintain vehicle speed if set. Some vehicles use a symbol that looks like a small speedometer to indicate that the cruise control is on. @Autogurukul
