3 1 Proficiency Test

4 Proficiency Test “proficiency” means having sufficient command of the language for a particular purpose Designed to measure people’s ability in a language, regardless of any training they may have had in that language Not based on courses that candidates may have previously taken.

5 2 Achievement Test

6 Achievement Test Purpose: how successful the students are and whether or not the course objectives have been achieved Final Achievement Test: administered at the end of a course Progress Achievement Test: intended to measure the progress that students are making.

7 3 Diagnostic Test

8 Diagnostic Test Used to identify learners’ strengths and weaknesses
Intended primarily to ascertain what learning still needs to take place The lack of good diagnostic tests is unfortunate.

9 4 Placement Test

10 Placement Test Intended to provide information that will help to place students in the stage most appropriate to their abilities Used to assign students to classes at different levels No one placement test will work for every institution.

11 Direct Testing VS Indirect Testing
5 Direct Testing VS Indirect Testing

12 Direct VS Indirect Testing
Testing is said to be direct when it requires the candidate to perform precisely the skill that we wish to measure Indirect testing attempts to measure the abilities that underlie the skills in which we are interested Some tests are referred to as semi-direct.

13 Discrete Point VS Integrative Testing
6 Discrete Point VS Integrative Testing

14 Discrete Point VS Integrative Testing
Discrete point testing refers to the testing of one element at a time, item by item. Integrative testing requires the candidate to combine many language elements in the completion of a task. Discrete point tests will almost always be indirect, while integrative tests will tend to be direct.

15 Norm-Referenced VS Criterion-Referenced Testing
7 Norm-Referenced VS Criterion-Referenced Testing

16 Norm-Referenced VS Criterion-Referenced
Norm-Referenced: a test designed to give information of how a candidate’s performance relates to that of other candidates. Criterion-Referenced: a test designed to give zero information on the comparation between two or more individuals’ performances.

17 Objective Testing VS Subjective Testing
8 Objective Testing VS Subjective Testing

18 Objective VS Subjective Testing
Objective Testing: when no judgement is required on the part of the scorer. Subjective Testing: when the judgement of scoring is called for. The less subjective the scoring, the greater agreement there will be between two different scorers.

19 Computer Adaptive Testing
9 Computer Adaptive Testing

20 Computer Adaptive Testing
This testing offers a potentially more efficient way of collecting information on people’s ability. Strong candidates get to attempt difficult items and weak candidates get to attempt easy items.

21 Communicative Language Testing
10 Communicative Language Testing

22 Communicative Language Testing
Usually, it is the communicative ability that people want to test. A communicative test is one which requires the students to complete an authentic task – in other words, a task which is a realistic reflection of a learner’s experiences in the outside world.
