3 The Mauryan Empire The first and the most powerful empire of India was the ‘Mauryan Empire’ which was founded by Chandragupta maurya. The capitals of the Empire were Taxila, Ujjain and pataliputra. Taxila was the gateway to the northwest, including Central Asia, while ujjain lay on the route from north to south. People ate different kinds of food and wore different types of clothes. Different languages were also spoken in different parts of the Empire.

5 Chandragupta Maurya Chandragupta defeated Nanda Dynasty to establish mauryan supremacy. He ruled for more than 2300 years ago He had a wise advisor called chanakya. He expanded his boundry from Afghanistan in the west to Assam in the East and from Kashmir in the north to karnataka in the south.

8 Ashoka Ashoka also known as ‘Ashoka the Great’ was one of the greatest emperors of India. Ashoka’s Empire streched from from Afghanistan in the west to bangladesh in the East. His empire covered almost all India , except present day Kerala, Tamilnadu and srilanka. He built edicts all over India including nepal and pakistan.

9 Kalinga war However, his last military campaign against Kalinga , was the turning point in his life. The whole city was destroyed and more than a hundred thousand people were killed in the war. Ashoka fought a war to conquer Kalinga. He decided to give up fighting wars after victory over kalinga. Because he was horrified by the violence and bloodshed in the city. The horrors of the war disturbed him so much that he decided to shun violence and turned to Buddism for the rest of his life.

10 The blood shed in the war was so much that it is said that daya river running next to the battlefield turned red with blood .

11 After converting to buddhism, Ashoka began to spread the teachings of Budha by issuing edicts.
Ashoka had friendly relations with his neighbours and sent special envoys with Burma [myanmar] and other southeast Asian countries to spread Buddhism.
