THERE ARE MANY KINDS OF MAMMALS
Mammals can be big as an elephant or small as a mouse Mammals are carnivores like tigers or herbivores like squirrels Mammals can be pets, such as a dog or wild animals you only see in the zoo, such as the polar bear Mammals live everywhere on Earth, even in our oceans

How Are Mammals the Same? All Mammals…
Have hair/fur on their body Give birth to live young Feed their babies milk Are warm-blooded

A mammal has hair on its body

A bird is NOT a mammal Birds do not have hair
A bird’s body is covered with feathers

A WHALE IS A MAMMAL Whales have a few, crinkly hairs around their blowhole. Some have small, whisker-like hairs on their snout. SNOUT BLOWHOLE

A mammal gives birth to live young

A turtle is NOT a mammal Turtles do not give birth to live young
They lay eggs The babies hatch from eggs

A WHALE IS A MAMMAL Female whales give birth to live young called calves. They push their baby to the ocean surface so that the calf can breathe air.

A mammal feeds its young milk

A frog is NOT a mammal A mother frog does not feed her babies milk
Baby frogs must find their own food

A WHALE IS A MAMMAL The whale calf drinks milk from its mother’s body. This is called nursing. Mother whales nurse their calves for about 6 months

A mammal is warm-blooded

A snake is NOT a mammal A snake is not warm-blooded
A snake’s body temperature is always changing If it’s cold outside, the snake’s blood becomes cold

A WHALE IS A MAMMAL Whales are warm-blooded. Their body temperature stays the same, even if the water temperature changes
