Likely written a short time after 612 B.C. when Babylon defeated Assyria and destroyed. B.C. Assyria’s power was at its zenith. 625 B.C. Babylon threw off the yoke of Assyrian domination. 609 B.C. Judah was controlled by Egypt. 605 B.C. Babylon decisively defeated Egypt at Carchemish This whole time Judah was caught in the middle and had formed alliances with or had been subjugated by all of the world powers at various times.

“How long will it be until God punishes the evil in Judah?” GOD’S ANSWER (1:5-11) “I will send the Chaldeans (Babylonians) to punish Judah.” THE PROPHET’S SECOND QUESTION (1:12-17) “Is it right to use a wicked nation to punish a nation less wicked?” GOD’S ANSWER (2:1-20) “The wicked will destroyed, but the righteous will live by their faith” THE PROPHET’S RESPONSE (3:1-19) “I accept whatever happens since God is all-powerful and all-good.”
