 Take out your agenda and write down the following: Test on Compass Rose Packet and Geography Terms 1&2 on Wednesday 09/27 Turn in Map Projects (each day late is -10 pts) Turn in “Request to Retest” forms (The deadline for Vocab. Quiz #2 is Friday) Grab your notebook. Name the 7 continents in alphabetical order.

A compass rose is a design on a map that shows directions. It shows north, south, east, west, northeast, northwest, southeast, and southwest. Label the 8 directions below.

4 East West, North South on The Earth
Let the X axis be the Equator. Let the Y axis be the Prime Meridian that runs through Greenwich outside of London. Lat/Long are the 2 grid points by which you can locate any point on earth. Y X

5 Latitude is the distance from the equator along the Y axis.
All points along the equator have a value of 0 degrees latitude. North pole = 90°N South pole = 90°S Values are expressed in terms of degrees. What is Latitude? 90°N Y X 90°S

6 What is Longitude? Longitude is the distance from the prime meridian along the X axis. All points along the prime meridian have a value of 0 degrees longitude. The earth is divided into two parts, or hemispheres, of east and west longitude. Y X 180°W 180°E

8 Equator The Equator divides the earth in half. It is a great imaginary line around the middle of the earth. It divides the earth into two equal parts – the Northern and the Southern Hemispheres.

9 Prime Meridian The Prime Meridian divides the earth in half, but the other way. It is an imaginary line running North and South. It divides the earth into two equal parts – the Western and the Eastern Hemispheres.
