1 Computer Basics Complete the Computer Basics worksheet as you explore this presentation.

2 What is a computer? A computer is an electronic machine that processes information. It takes information in Then processes the information Then sends the end result out Reasons to use a computer: Communication Performs tasks quickly Saves time and effort Information and education tool Entertainment For more information :

3 Computers are Useful

4 Analogy of a Computer A computer is like a desk.
The top of your desk should only have the things that you use all of the time for easy access (Desktop) Everything else should be put away into drawers (Documents, Drive, Cloud) Putting papers into folders inside the drawer makes it organized. (Files & Folders) Every folder and file should have a specific name so you can find it easier. (Filename, Extensions)

5 Naming Your Files All filenames have 2 parts
The name and the extension that identifies the type of file. All files in this class will be named as the LessonName.YourName example: Lesson1.Carey.docx Name Extension Example filename: plant_diseases.doc

6 Folder/Files Assignment
Create a space (folder) inside of documents, for you to save all of your work on the computer. Name that space your first and last name. Create 3 Files and save them to your space (folder). Each file must have a header with your name, page number, and title of the document. Save each file as your name.title. Example carey.poems

7 Types of Computers Supercomputers Mainframes Mini-Computers
There are many types of computers. Here are 4 types: Supercomputers Mainframes Mini-Computers Personal Computers (PC)…

8 Super Computer Supercomputers...are used to process very large amounts of information including processing information to predict hurricanes, satellite images and navigation, and process military war scenarios.

9 Mainframe Mainframes...are used by government and businesses to process very large amounts of information.

10 Minicomputer Minicomputers have been stand-alone computers (computer systems with attached terminals and other devices) sold to small and mid-size businesses. In recent years, the minicomputer has evolved into the "mid-range server" and is part of a network.

11 Personal Computers (PC)
Handheld Portable Desktop Personal Computers...also known as PC’s...are smaller and less powerful than the others. They are used in homes, schools, and small businesses.

12 Networks A network is a group of computers that share information and hardware. The computers are connected together using copper phone wires, fiber optic cables, or radio waves. The Internet is many networks around the world that are all connected together to make 1 huge network.

13 Parts of a Computer Hardware Software
There are two basic parts that make up every computer... Hardware Software Physical Pieces Instructions

14 Hardware Hardware is basically anything that you can touch (the physical pieces). Computer Case CPU (central processing unit...Pentium chip) Monitor Keyboard & Mouse Disk Drive, Zip Drive, CD-ROM, DVD, Hard Drive Memory (RAM) Speakers Printer

15 Hardware You See

16 The components inside the computer are hardware
Hardware You Don’t See The components inside the computer are hardware

17 Hardware (Continued) There are three types/categories of hardware
1. Input Devices 2. Output Devices 3. Storage Devices

18 Input Devices Input basically means getting information into the computer. Keyboard, Mouse, Trackball, Touch Pad Light Pen, Laser Scanner, Pointing Stick Touch Screen, Bar Code Reader, Scanner Microphone, Joystick

19 Output Devices Output basically means getting data out of the computer. Monitor Printer Speakers Headphones Modem Fax

20 Storage Devices A storage device is a place to keep data that has been processed so that it can be retrieved at a later time to be used again. Hard Disk Floppy Disk CD’s, DVD’s Magnetic Tape Flash Memory, Jump Drive Case or Tower

21 Software Software is the programs and applications that tell the computer what to do and how to look. The instructions for the computer. Computer programmers write the codes/instructions that make-up software applications/programs. HTML (Hyper Text Markup Language) is a type of computer programming language that allows programmers to make web pages. The next 2 slides show what HTML codes look like and the web page the codes produce.

22 HTML is written by programmers…

23 …To create web pages.

24 Two Types of Software Application Software or Programs
Operating System Software

25 Operating System Software
The instructions for how the hardware and software will work together. A computer will not run without an operating system. Examples would be: DOS, Windows Unix, Linux, MAC

26 Before an Operating System with GUI
DOS is an example of a command line operating system. This is how computers looked before GUI. To use this operating system a user would have to memorize commands because there were no icons or mouse pointer.

27 Operating Systems: GUI
To make computers easier to use, GUI Operating Systems were created. GUI stands for Graphical User Interface (Pictures in Your Face) Provides pictures (Icons) to represent files, folders, programs etc. Provides a mouse to allow users to point and click to open Made the computer less intimidating and more user friendly

28 Example of GUI

29 Application Software Programs that work with operating system to allow the user to complete tasks. Basically, Application Software is all programs other than an operating system.

30 Application Software There are six basic types of application software: Business software: word processors, spreadsheets, and database programs. Communication software: allows computers to communicate with other computers: Skype, Messenger, GMail. Graphics software: software that allows users to create and manipulate graphics...Photoshop, Draw Plus, Fotor etc. Education and Reference software: Programs that help teach new material and ideas, and programs that can be used to find information: JumpStart, ALEKS, MicroType. Entertainment and Leisure software: Minecraft, Pandora, Netflix, Halo Integrated software: Combines several types of software into one program or package...Quicken (Spreadsheet/data base/communications/reference) or Photo Shop (Graphics/Word processor).

31 Software Programming Assignment
Explore the Swift Playgrounds App on your iPad for the next 2 days and go as far as you can.
