5 Online Facilitation: Basics

6 What is a webinar? Please raise your hand WEB ONLINE INAR SEMINAR

7 Compare apples with apples…
Both seminars and webinars can be… Interactive Unilateral Interesting Uninteresting Well facilitated Poorly facilitated On track Derailed

8 The Bottom Line? The basis of good online webinars is the same as a good in-person seminars: strong facilitation Some differences based on delivery Preparation Activities and interaction Timing

9 Facilitation should be
Learner-focused at all times Have clear learning outcomes Think about what participants need to know, not what you need to say Flexible to meet the needs of each “cohort” Considerate of the whole learning picture

10 What are the elements of a webinar?
Example: the online “room” Who or what else is involved in a webinar? The facilitator The impetus/motivation The content/material Other participants

11 What is your “whole learning picture” today?
What could be distracting to you in this room today? What could be distracting to you that is not in this room today? What is the best way to keep you focused on this space? Can you read this? YOU

12 How to keep participant focus
Set expectations from the outset Involve participants as much as possible Make it easy to hop back in Be authentic to the learning outcomes and situation

13 Breakout! 5 minutes: Top Pro/Top Cons to webinars
Benefits Drawbacks No travel required (CO2, expense, time) Work from the office or home (comfortable, easier to schedule, less space needed) No interpersonal interaction (feel safe, less social pressure, more focused) No travel required (less in- person interaction) Work from the office or home (distractions, crams the day, noise pollution) No interpersonal interaction (feel alone, less accountable, no warmth)
