1 Differentiating between EMOTIONS & FEELINGS and HOW TO EXPRESS THEM
Arts Academy at Benjamin Rush

2 Review From 6th grade: Emotions and Feelings are Different.
EMOTIONS are permanent parts of our human “self”. We all have them. They manifest or cause Feelings FEELINGS are temporary and are brought out by events. This in turn causes effects to our body and mind and we often show to other people via expressions or behaviors/actions. TEST: say “I AM________” or “I can be____” and add the word there. IF it fits, it’s probably a feeling, If it doesn’t, it’s usually an Emotion).

3 WHAT ARE THE EMOTIONS? Robert Plutchik created a theory in 1997 that stated there are eight basic emotions that are responsible for all feelings Other work since his theory have added additional emotions On the following slides, you should list the emotions but you SHOULD NOT write each definition This powerpoint is also available on corabi’s website

4 WHAT ARE THE EMOTIONS? Robert Plutchik's 8 emotions (you can skip writing the definition) Fear → feeling of being afraid, frightened, scared. Anger → feeling angry. A stronger word for anger is rage Sadness → feeling sad. Other words are sorrow, grief  (a stronger feeling, for example when someone has died) Joy → feeling happy. Other words are happiness, gladness

5 WHAT ARE THE EMOTIONS? Robert Plutchik’s 8 emotions continued
Disgust → feeling something is wrong or nasty. Strong disapproval. Surprise → being unprepared for something. Trust → a positive emotion; admiration is stronger; acceptance is weaker. Anticipation → in the sense of looking forward positively to something which is going to happen. Expectation is more neutral

6 Robert Plutchik‘’s Wheel of Emotions HIS Emotions are in The 2nd circle

7 10 MOST COMMON EMOTIONS: Love Hate Guilt Anger JOY Sadness Depression Disgust Fear Anger

8 SMALL GROUP ASSIGNMENT:
Remember Emotions cause feelings and feelings are Shown to others via expressions, actions or behaviors. They can be positive or negative? What makes an expression positive or negative? (students raise your hands to answer)

9 Negative or Positive? NEGATIVE = harmful or hurtful to someone else, something else or one’s self. Sometimes, a person has a negative expression, behavior or action that makes themselves feel better but is STILL Negative POSITIVE = SIMPLE…Helpful and not harmful, to anyone or anything

10 SMALL GROUP ASSIGNMENT:
Take a marker or 2 and a chart paper per group. You may use your own markers/colored pencils etc. too There should also be extra pieces of chart paper on each “table” with stray marks on it to keep under your group’s copy so the marker doesn’t go through onto the desks. CREATE A GRAPHIC ORGANIZER listing 2 positive and 2 negative ways to express emotions or feelings per person per group on (so a group of 5 should have 10 positive and 10 negative answers). Each group will be assigned an emotion On next slide

11 SMALL GROUP ASSIGNMENT:
You can have the remainder of class today and the first 10 minutes tomorrow to finish this. After the 1st 10 minutes tomorrow, 1 person per group should be up at the white board with your posters presenting your answers. Love Hate Guilt Anger Joy Sadness Depression Disgust Each of these can have positive or negative expressions/actions/behaviors
