8 Key Findings in Gartner MQ Report for 2005
“Veritas NetBackup continues to lead with strong financials and market share and has made progress in addressing product weaknesses.” “The support for NetApp snapshots and for backup to NearStor in a format that is readable both by NetBackup and by NetApp tools is industry leading.” “The acquisition of DCT Technologies will help Veritas deliver on its Continuous Data Protection (CDP) and remote office promises sooner.” VERITAS simplifies product delivery by incorporating options into the core product. VERITAS gives users additional value through with new functionality and greater flexibility through integrated options. NEW OPTIONS in 5.x 1) Advanced Client – Consolidated a number of advanced functions into one option. The following were consolidated into the AC: ServerFree Agent, Snapshots, FlashBackup, Oracle Block Level Incremental (BLI) (in 5.0) NetApp SnapShot and SnapRestore capability (in 5.1 ) ADDITION TO CORE IN 6.0 1 ) Functionality previously provided through Global Data Manager (GDM) will now be part of the core product, plus the new Operations Manager will include alert capabilities and real-time monitoring. NEW OPTIONS in 6.0 Bare Metal Restore (BMR), previously a separate product now an integrated option with NBU. Use one interface to control backups or BMR. 2) New Advanced Client Functionality – Further NetApp integration PART 1: SnapVault Integration – Schedule, configure, and manage SnapVault operations. This integration provides the ability to store multiple, primary snapshots from multiple filers, on a less expensive secondary device (…the VAULT metaphor). PART 2: Move snapshots to a secondary store (NetApp NearStore) SnapVault only transfers changed blocks from the primary to the secondary (single instance store (SIS) or commonality factoring) This will permits user-initiated restores with the availability of OnTap 7.1.1 Allows NetApp filers to be backed up to a NetApp NearStore <END>

9 A Perspective on the Enterprise Backup and Recovery Software Market
“The enterprise distributed systems backup/recovery software market is a maturing market with four vendors capturing more than $100 million in new license revenue in 2004 and 78.9 percent of the market, up from 78.2 percent in Computer Associates was the only vendor to report a decline in new license revenue, giving up 2.3 points of market share with CommVault capturing 0.8 of those points.” What is the impact here? Enterprise backup and recovery is not a green field opportunity NetBackup must protect its share and steal from others

10 Who wants this product? All industries (backup and recovery products fit well across all verticals) Everyone needs to have backup!! Backup technology is a mature market and does not require an educational sale Most sales happen at hands-on level (sys admin or backup admin), but value pitch can and should be made higher (CxO)

18 Am I asking the right questions?
How do you currently protect your systems today? How are your backups performing? Restores? How is backup going to be performed for your new application rollout? What methods do you use to recover systems? What are your recovery objectives?

19 License Server(s) Client(s) Tape Drive(s)
Start with the basics- What is needed? Select the NetBackup edition or flavor (Enterprise Server or Server) License the “must have” components (licensed per physical machine or device) Server(s) Client(s) Tape Drive(s) Is there any opportunity for additional agents or options? Database-Aware Backup and Recovery (licensed per machine regardless of instance) Enhanced Disaster Recovery Bare Metal Restore (licensed per machine), Vault (licensed per tape drive) Backup and Recovery for SAN and NAS architectures Shared Storage Option (licensed per tape drive), NDMP Option (licensed per NDMP machine) Advanced Backup and Recovery Technologies Advanced Client (licensed per machine, drop base client license if this machine will be a client) Security Encryption Option (licensed per machine) Other Virtual Tape Option (by native capacity of VT device) Desktop and Laptop Option (pack of 100)

20 Configuration (Enterprise Server)
Clients Media Server(s) Master Server NetBackup Enterprise Server is built upon a 3 tier architecture. *Note* Master & Media servers can be UNIX, Linux, Windows, or any combination. The first tier is the Master Server. The Master Server acts as the “brains” of NetBackup, controlling functions such as job scheduling, backup classes and maintaining the meta data such as tape media and detailed client backup data. The Master Server may be configured to back up and recover data. [RETURN] The second tier is the Media Server, which performs backup and recovery operations. The Media Server was designed to place the backup and recovery close to where the data is. For example, Media Servers can be deployed throughout the enterprise to backup other servers (UNIX, Windows, NetWare) and workstations (e.g. MAC, OS/2, Win98). Another popular use of Media Servers is where there is an application server running a large database application. This application server can become a NetBackup Media server so that local (direct SCSI attach or SAN attach to a tape device/library) backup and recovery can occur. This type of backup is the fastest method possible for larger amounts of data (e.g. several 100 gigabytes). [RETRUN] The third tier consists of the clients themselves that are backed up by the Media (and in some installations, Master) Servers. A “client” can be a UNIX, Linux, Windows or Novell NetWare server or one of many workstation O/S such as MAC OS, Win98 or OS/2. In addition, NetBackup supports OpenVMS clients and Linux clients running on IBM zSeries (OS/390) systems. The combination of a Master Server and one or more Media Server is called a storage domain. Unique Features to mention: 1) Automatic Media Server failover (ensures clients are protected in case the primary Media Server fails). 2) Server independent restore (ensures tapes can be restored via alternate media server).

21 Configuration (Server)
Clients Server Built upon a 2 tier architecture, NetBackup Server combines the NetBackup Master Server and NetBackup Media Server into a single Server. *Note* NetBackup Server servers may be implemented on UNIX, Linux, or Windows. The first tier is the Server. The Server acts as the “brains” of NetBackup, controlling functions such as job scheduling, backup classes and maintaining the meta data such as tape media and detailed client backup data. The Server may be configured to back up and recover data. It also performs the actual backup and recovery operations. [RETURN] The second tier consists of the clients themselves that are backed up by the server. A single NetBackup Server server is a NetBackup Storage Domain, much like a single NetBackup Enterprise Server Master Server and associated NetBackup Enterprise Server Media Servers are a NetBackup Storage Domain. Multiple NetBackup Server servers may be centrally managed via Global Data Manager.

22 License- Tips and Tricks
NetBackup, like other former VERITAS products, has a tiered structure NetBackup has a 4 tier pricing model (unlike Storage Foundations) There are a few exceptions to this rule (tape drives, SSO, Vault, BMR, DLO, VTO) NetBackup does not charge for use of disk except if the device is virtual tape Use the NetBackup pricing and licensing guide to help (

How long does it take you to recover from a disaster? Bare Metal Restore, formerly sold as a separate product has now become part of NetBackup. There will be no more separate releases of this product. Integration with NetBackup allows administrators simply check a box to collect disaster recovery information about the server when configuring policies. Another integration point that simplifies administration: BMR database catalog will automatically be backed up during NBU Master Server Catalog backups. We also added support for additional O/Ss (see slide above) For customers with VxVM or thinking about VxVM AIX, HP, and Windows BMR clients can use VERITAS Volume Manager (Solaris has existed for years) What actually occurred in the integration with NetBackup Common Code Source, Installation / Packaging, Admin Console, Policies, Scheduler, Logging, & Security for customers that already have BMR Merged boot & file servers for simpler administration. Significantly improved BMR server performance BMR clients deployed as part of standard NBU deployment (common code packaging enables this)
