3 What was the initial relationship between the First Nations and the settlers of New France?
Fur trading was the main thing that happened between these two groups. The fur trade started very early, sometime around the 1500s. The settlers also brought some helpful things to New France, like clothing, meat, and new materials that they would build houses with. These materials could help the First Nations. The First Nations believed in using only as much material as needed, but the settlers over-hunted some species for fur, such as the beaver.

Today some people were spotted on our land… I wonder what they are doing here? More people have arrived, and seem to be claiming the land. But the land should be open to all, because it belongs to the earth and not us. The people call themselves Europeans, and they have started hunting! At this rate, our animals will be gone very soon. The Europeans want to trade! We have many furs and medicines to trade with them and help them, as they are not as experienced with these diseases. Diary entry of a First Nations person in New France

We are about to land in this exciting new territory! How wonderful! I hope to claim some new land for our king, and our country. I have heard that this land has many resources, so I can hopefully make some money. Now I am leaving the ship! We have encountered some other people, while claiming the land. They seem more accustomed to living here. I wonder what they are doing here? The First Nations have many good survival skills and know the lay of the land, and they are trading with us, for furs, and other goods. They have medicine to cure our scurvy, as well!
