1 The Extended Paragraph
Like an essay but shorter

2 What is an Extended Paragraph
"Extended" just means long or lengthy. An extended paragraph is just a long paragraph. It is usually a more formal kind of paragraph than the ones you normally write - you will need to have a strong topic sentence, supporting facts, and a concluding sentence for this type of paragraph. It is like an essay because it follows the structure of an academic essay: topic sentence/thesis (main idea), explanation of the main idea, signal phrases, quotes, explanation of the quotes, and a conclusion that relates back to the main idea.

3 Difference Between a Simple Paragraph and an Extended Paragraph
Santa Fe is a great place to visit. The local cuisine is incredible. It includes spicy street food, ethnic eateries, and authentic New Mexican Chile Burgers. It is also a beautiful place, with majestic mountains, and even a ski mountain. The people are so friendly. Complete strangers often stop to chat with foreigners or ask them if they need help. This has happened to me. These are just some of the reasons I think Santa Fe is a fantastic place to live. EXTENDED PARAGRAPH Santa Fe is a great place to visit because of its cuisine, mountains, and friendliness. Not only is the cuisine most distinctive serving food from New Mexican Chile Burgers to an ethnic montage of Japanese sushi or African Pir-i Piri chicken. Also, Santa Fe boast of the beautiful Sangre de Cristo mountains and the ethnic diversity of people chatting on the Plaza. Many travel essays express the exceptional qualities of Santa Fe. For example, "Spice up your day with a green chile cheeseburger," writes Laura Longwell in her travel blog, Travel Addicts. " And, visit the Plaza, since Santa Fe was founded over 400 years ago, the Plaza has been its cultural hub. A National Historic Landmark, it hosts regular Indian and Spanish markets plus concerts and community gatherings. As well, in the winter, head to Ski Santa Fe. It’s not a huge mountain, but there are ample runs for beginner to intermediate skiers (like me) and slightly more advanced skiers (like Lance). Ski Santa Fe has seven chairlifts and 79 runs, and we barely waited in line, even on a very busy day. (Longwell) Since Longwell is an avid travel blogger who reviews destinations from Africa to Greenland, she confirms that this is a city full of "charm, culture, fun, and deliciousness in Santa Fe, New Mexico." As you can see, the adventures that abound in this enchanting city although not limited to food, fun, or diversity uncovers some of the great things to do, see, and eat while visiting Santa Fe. So, when deciding what is a great place to visit among the 35,000 recognized cities in these United States, check out Santa Fe--one of the truly great places to visit.

4 Parts of an Extended Paragraph
1.) Analysis of the prompt. For example: What is the theme of the poem, "How to Be a Person" by Shane Koyczan? 2.) Topic sentence that acts as a thesis (statement that tells your reader what the paper is about and also help guide your writing and keep your argument focused). The statement has a subject (The theme ..., ), and opinion (of coming of age...) and three points of the opinion telling how does the text show this--(through 3.) Two sentences explaining the topic sentence/thesis 4.) One signal phrase before the quote (This quote shows...) 5.) Quote from the text that supports the lines above 6.) A citation w/ author’s last name and page number, or line number 7.) A signal phrase after the quote. (This quote shows...) 8.) At least two sentences explaining or expanding on the quote. 9.) Conclusion that relates or ties back to the topic sentence/thesis 10) Format: Title of text italics; transitions are highlighted; parts of topic sentence/thesis underlined

5 Let’s Look at the Text(download hard copy)
Warning: Some references or words may be offensive. If this is the case, please download and only read the edited version.

6 Let’s Determine Theme--a theme is NEVER one word.
Read/listen to the text Make a list of topics related to the text. (self-awareness, individuality, hope etc) Create a sentence of what the author believes about the topic as shown by the text. For example: The author believes self-awareness helps one become a genuine person. Cross out The author believes self-awareness helps one become a genuine person. You have a theme! Self-awareness helps one become a genuine person.

7 Your Turn Practice and come up with your own theme.

8 Next--the points Find two examples in the poem that show this theme.
If you cannot, then that’s not the theme and find another.
