1 London Fire Brigade – structure and functions
October 4th 2019 Spencer to introduce himself and touch upon the effective working relationship he has developed working with Zara and Age UK. Background as Hammersmith and Fulham BC at the time of Grenfell might also be a point of interest for delegates, if you don’t mind mentioning?

2 Explain that the public face of the Fire Brigade – that of emergency response – is often the one most people are familiar with. However, we have many more functions and services that work alongside our frontline response to provide a holistic approach to making London a safer city. This brief introduction will help provide a broader understanding of what we do and how we operate.

3 Using the structural chart as a prompt, talk through how the Brigade is organised and highlight some of the departments which may be of particular interest to the audience – feel free to deviate as you see fit, but I would suggest focussing on… Control and Mobilising/ Fire Stations: providing the frontline emergency response with which everyone is familiar – although the range and types of emergencies we deal with may be less obvious (we will come to this shortly under #notjustfires) Communications: this is how we get our message out to people Fire Safety: the functions that ‘regulatory’ and ‘community’ safety teams fulfil Training and Professional Development: how we continually improve our services by training and developing our people (the recent ‘no notice’ exercise might be a nice one to highlight)

x 38101 NE Area Team: x 35728 Explain how London is divided into quadrants (with a DAC) and then Boroughs (with a BC). Outline the function of the CS Area Teams, and how these are the first port of call for anyone wanting to establish links on a local level (each delegate will receive one of these maps to take away with them, contact details for all four local area teams are included). 5 #notjustfires (emergency response)
Apart from fires, here are some of the types of emergencies we respond to… FRU – rescuing residents during flooding. Water Safety info to touch upon: We have joint responsibility (along with the RNLI) for conducting rescues in the Thames and other London waterways, and it is for this reason that throwlines form part of the operational kit carried on fire appliances. All Competent Firefighters will have completed Level 1 Water Rescue Training. We have 10 FRUs which have water rescue capabilities, and two fire boats. Every borough has water, and our water safety messaging is targeted at keeping Londoners safe whether they are in London, elsewhere in the UK or abroad. It also applies to those visiting London.

6 #notjustfires (emergency response)
Firefighters from Hillingdon assisting RSPCA, Berkshire and Bucks F&RS – they used heavy lifting equipment to rescue a horse stuck in a deep pit.

7 #notjustfires (emergency response)
Firefighters using specialist line rescue equipment to assist LAS crews to lower an injured man from a roof in Bishopsgate.

8 #notjustfires (emergency response)
Working alongside LAS at an RTC. Road Safety info to touch upon: Road Safety – the number of road deaths in London significantly outweighs the number of fire deaths (by around 2.5 times). Most vehicle deaths and seriously injured incidents will be attended by the LFB. ‘Killed or Seriously Injured’ (KSIs) stats have plateaued over the last 10 years our focus is to proactively reduce these numbers in support of the Mayor’s ‘Vision Zero’ target to eliminate KSIs from London’s roads by 2041.
