12 Let’s Begin…. Listen and read along as I read the beginning of Chapter 1 of Hatchet by Gary Paulsen. I will at the end of the 3rd paragraph page 6. It is important to pay attention to Brian’s words, actions, and thoughts because author’s use characters to convey important messages in a story.

13 Listen as I share my thinking about what we have read.
One thing I’m noticing is that we get to hear a lot of what Brian is thinking while he is flying in this plane and from Brian’s thoughts I can tell he seems upset or angry because his parents got a divorce and he seems to know some sort of secret about his mother. I wonder what “the secret” is.

14 Now, write an annotation with me.
Label a post it with T: I notice that Brian does a lot of thinking inside of his head and we get to hear a lot of his thoughts. He is thinking back to what happened during the divorce and how the judges decided who he would live with. He also thinks about how his father didn’t really understand why his mother wanted a divorce, but Brian knows because of “The Secret.”

15 What do you notice about Brian’s words, actions, and thoughts so far?
We completed a “T” annotation together already. Does anyone have an annotation to share which was labeled a “W” or “A”? How did you determine to label it “W/T”? (on your notes) The text says on p.___ that Brian_(action)_____ or text says on p.____ that Brain said__(words)____.

16 Other Possible Annotations:
W: Brian seems bored or lonely because of the way he describes the pilot not speaking with him. A: Brian seems excited to learn new things, but also nervous or hesitant based on his reaction to the pilot when the pilot lets him steer the plane.
