2 INTRODUCTION Nomadic People This Chapter studies a different group of Nomadic people the Mongols of the central Asia who established a transcontinental Empire under the leadership of Genghis Khan during the 13th and 14th Century connecting Europe and Asia. This chapter teaches the manner in which the Mongols under Genghis Khan adopted their traditional social and political customs to create a fearsome military machine and sophisticated method of governance. 3 INTRODUCTION They innovated and compromised, creating a Nomadic empire that had a huge impact on the history of Eurasia. The most valuable research on the Mongols was done by Russian scholars in the 18th and 19th century as the Tsarist regime consolidated its control over central Asia. 5 SOCIAL AND POLITICAL BACKGROUND
Who were Mongols ? How they were able to create a vast Empire from North China, Transoxiana , Afghanistan , Eastern Iran to the Russian Steppes. The Mongols were a diverse body of people, linked by similarities of language to the Tatars, Khitan and Manchus to the east and the Turkic tribes to the west.

7 MONGOLS Some of the Mongols were pastoralists while others were hunter-gatherers. They were nomadic who lived in the steppes of Central Asia which is called Mongolia today. The hunter-gatherers resided to the north of the pastoralists in the Siberian forests. The pastoralists tended horses, sheep and , to a lesser extend , cattle, goats and camels.

8 MONGOLS The Mongols lived in tents, gers , and travelled with their herds from their winter to summer pasture lands. They did not take to farming . There is one door and no windows.  Doors normally are intricately painted in orange or blue A Mongolian ger is the same as a Russian yurt.
