1 Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones
Is the Cloning Possible?

2 What Were Going to Talk About
The Movie Cells What is Cloning The Two types How it works How it relates to the movie Fact vs. Fiction The problems with Cloning Controversy with cloning Real life success

3

4 In the Movie: An army of clones All clone copies of original person
All genetically identical to one man All look the same as one man Genetically modified to have certain traits Age double the speed of regular humans Clones are mass produced by the thousands

5 What is Cloning? Definition: A cell, cell product, or organism that is genetically identical to the unit or individual from which it was derived.

6 What does that mean? Creation of 2 (or more) organisms that are exactly alike Look the same Genetically alike

7 Cells All cells have nucleus
In nuclease is DNA which contains all info to create organism Chromosomes are organized structure of DNA and protein found in nucleus Reproductive cell has one set of chromosomes Regular cell has two sets of chromosomes Two sets needed for an organism

8 Artificial Embryo Twinning
Low tech version of cloning Twins are natural cones Artificial Embryo Twinning mimics natural process Occurs on petri dish not in body Separates two early embryo

9 Somatic Cell Nuclear Transfer (SCNT):
High-tech version of cloning Different approach as Artificial Embryo Twinning same outcome Nucleus of somatic cell placed in reproductive cell Because it has 2 sets of chromosomes doesn’t need other reproductive cell Cell then placed in a surrogate mother Exact physical and genetic copy of original organism is born

10 Cloning isn't Perfect High failure rate Very inefficient
Takes a very long time Things cloned usually die soon Usually have problems with later development Have many medical issues Usually are born with much larger organs Causes blood problems

11 Dolly the Sheep First successful mammal cloning
Got people to notice cloning technology One of few animals cloned to survive for years Used SCNT Exact replica of different female sheep White sheep born from a black sheep

12 Is it Right to Clone Things?
We don’t know Could be dangerous Development of cloned things is uncertain Don’t know how things would develop Things cloned usually die young Humans rights issues Animal rights issues

13 Is Cloning Right?

14 How Cloning Relates to the Movie
Humans are cloned Mass produced One of the 2 ways of cloning (unspecified in the movie) is used to make thousands of clones at once No failures spoken of in movie

15 Fact vs. Fiction Cloning is a very carful slow process
Difficult to impossible to mass produce clones Just because they were clones doesn’t mean they age at double the speed Human cloning is only theoretical. Never actually been tried

16

17 Review on Cloning Cloning is creating one or more organisms identical to one another both physically and genetically 2 ways: S.C.N.T and Artificial Embryo Twinning Very difficult to clone things Very controversial

18 Review on Cloning (Continued)
Very high failure rate Things cloned usually have major medical issues Cloning humans is very controversial Cloning from Star Wars is very un-realistic

19 Final Conclusion Not possible to be able to create an army of clones that fast Clones have unrealistic traits that just because they are cloned doesn’t mean they should have these traits Not possible with current technology Maybe possible in future
