Your own pace (from 2 quarters to 8 quarters) Earn a grade of C or better in all courses Meet with me or Dr. Dent once per quarter Allowed to take more than 8 courses, if you want Pay per course…so taking more than 8 = more $$ Would really only make sense if UG major was not psych A few students have done this (but not common)
6
Research Labs 10 hours/week in the lab
Talk to us before quarter starts if need fewer hrs Set up a schedule for the quarter Treat like a job Contact mentor ASAP if going to be late or absent Avoid personal s, texts, other work while in lab Keep socializing with labmates to a minimum Ask about dress code Even if no dress code: avoid tank tops, short shorts, etc. You will receive training Ensure a strong letter of recommendation Take initiative, follow through, be helpful Proactively contact, take on responsibility Be dependable and conscientious Arrive early & stay late Complete tasks efficiently and accurately Adhere to the rules and regulations off the lab (including fulfilling time commitments)
7
Field Study Intern at a community organization, such as:
Youth & domestic violence shelters Centers for individuals with developmental disabilities Community centers & rehab centers Health care organizations School-based counseling organizations Juvenile justice diversion programs On-campus centers/departments (such as the Campus Resource Assault & Education Center, the UCI Dept. of Human Resources, and the UCI Infant & Toddler Center) For the full listing, visit: (note: must be on campus to access catalog) 4 units = 10 hours/week Can also do 3 units for 7.5 hours/week or 2 units for 5 hours/week Weekly or Bi-Weekly class meetings 10+ page paper with scholarly references Pass/no pass Apply at least one quarter in advance Strongly recommended to attend info session Fall info sessions: For a Winter field study, should apply by the end of Week 2 (fall) For a Spring field study, should apply in early December Read more at: [Alternatively, could simply volunteer]
8
Research vs. Field Study
Typically 10 hours/week Possible weekly lab meeting Units are graded May have to write a paper Assigned to a research lab/professors as soon as you join program (Typically) On campus Work with UCI prof & grad student Help with conducting research projects; may result in presentations at the UROP conference or other professional conferences Virtually all post-bacc students participate in research every quarter they are in the program Typically 10 hours/week Bi-weekly class meeting Units are pass/no pass Must write 10-page paper Apply for internship one quarter in advance (after attending info session) from a list of pre-approved sites (Typically) Off campus Work for site supervisor (not a prof or grad student) Duties vary by placement – but typically involve working directly with clients, children, and/or community populations Makes most sense for those interested in applied psychology (clinical/counseling, I/O psych); typically intern for just one quarter at your field study site
9

UCI Email Sign up for a UCI email account
Class s will be sent to uci.edu address Check this (and all) addresses regularly! Strongly recommended to reply within 24 hours (or at least within 48 hours) This is important! is the academic’s primary means of communication Please don’t make us (or your faculty mentors, grad students, professors, or TAs) “chase you down” by having to send you multiple messages before you will respond. This makes you look bad - and it frustrating – and even a bit disrespectful - to the person who is sending the messages. Reply to ALL messages (even if it is just to say, “Got it, thanks!”) EXCEPTION: Group that does not ask for a response Away from for >48 hours? Put vacation msg May want to have uci forwarded Changing (or physical) address? Please let me know Make sure s are professional Always include a greeting (e.g., Hi Professor X) Include a signature with your full name Spell-check and proof-read before sending Avoid emoticons

Take advantage of all opportunities! Attend as many talks & workshops as you can Go to (or present) at a professional conference Present at UROP Take a GRE course Go to/do things your research mentor and/ or field study supervisor recommends Visit Dmitry during office hours in Fall (e.g., when applying for grad school) Join the UCI Psychological Science Post-Bacc facebook page Start thinking early about who could write you letters of recommendation Research mentor, small seminars, professors w/multiple courses with, me, Dr. Dent Ask professors AT LEAST one month (ideally 2 months) before deadline Ask BEFORE inputting their information into graduate (or job) applications For hard copy letter forms, complete top portion & sign before giving to professor Fill out as much as possible on these forms (hard copy and electronic) Get lots of feedback on your statement of purpose (Dmitry, me, advisor, letter writers) Ask lots of questions! Ask research/field study supervisors about their career Ask grad students/TA about their experiences Ask questions during workshops, office hours, etc.
