2 Purpose The purpose of this paper was to:
Explore accommodations for nursing students with disabilities Examine the perception and attitude toward students with disabilities being accepted to schools of nursing Discuss the utilization of the Theory of Caring in order to alter faculty perception

3 Literature Review Focused on there concepts
Criteria for admission to nursing school based on ability to perform essential skills Should not be determined by essentials but should include technical standards The what not how a skill can be performed Accommodation Faculty would rather not provide accommodation ADA does not define accommodation so accommodation is interpreted by faculty Delegation as a way of providing accommodation Faculty attitude/perception of students with disabilities Attitude predicts behavior Explicit and implicit behavior Explicit attitude well documented. Implicit attitude not well documented Disability Attitude Implicit Association Test (DA-IAT) and open ended questions measured implicit attitude

4 Findings Laws prior to ADA and ADAA focused on safety not accommodation Landmark case Southeastern Community College v. Davis ADA enacted 1990 Person with disability defined as someone who has Physical or mental impairment which hinders 1 or more life impairments Has a record of such impairment Regarded as having such an impairment Revision of ADA was ADAA 2008 Expanded protection of ADA Focused on daily living activities such as seeing, hearing, sleeping breathing, bowel and bladder

5 Faculty Attitude Faculty attitude:
Contributed to decrease in admission to nursing school Had preference for abled-bodied students Concern for patient safety Faculty belief: Fear students with disability could not function in the clinical setting Students could not pass the licensure exam

6 Caring Theory Nel Noddings Theory of Care
Aim of education should be to produce competent, caring, loving and loveable people All teachers are not caring Caring teachers listen to their students Teacher and student are “carer” and cared for

7 Conclusion and Recommendations
If nurse educators can establish an attitude of caring they will be able to have empathy for their student Recommendations Additional research is needed: Studies regarding nurses educator’s attitude on essential abilities Evidence-based teaching strategies for students in clinical, skills and classroom Effectiveness of disabled nurse researchers in providing faculty development
