Away Games – uniform & laundry has to be returned the night of the game Bring a spare change of close if a parent needs to take a child from a game PRIOR to the game day that you will be checking out an athlete
36
Coach Expectations Our goal is to develop men of character and integrity. We want to develop kids who are more than simply good middle school athletes. Our desire is to develop young men who will be successful in life. We hope to be positive examples of hard work and hope to instill characteristics that help them succeed in life beyond sports We will make mistakes as coaches, but we love your kids and desire to see grow We will push them grow as athletes and humans which will be challenging at times We will hold them accountable for their actions beyond athletics (i.e. grades and behavior in the classroom
37
Parent Expectations While winning is important to all of us, in middle school sports, it is not THE most important thing. The goal of our Middle School Program is to emphasize Learning, Teamwork, and to Foster a Lifetime Love for the Game, and for personal health and fitness. What We Should Say When Our Kids Perform Based on psychological research, the three healthiest statements moms and dads can make as they perform are: Before the Competition: After the competition: Have fun. 1. Did you have fun? Play hard. 2. I’m proud of you. I love you. 3. I love you.
38
Parent Expectations One of the most damaging things a parent or guardian can do is to undermine the work that their child’s coach is doing while in front of their child. If you have concerns about what we are trying to do, do not hesitate to contact me and we can discuss what needs to be discussed in a mature and respectful manner. Children are pleasers and they want to please their coaches, and they want to especially please their parents. Sending mixed messages to a young teenage athlete can lead to many undesirable conclusions. Support your children 100%, and support their coaches. We all have their best interests in mind. ESPECIALLY AT EAST!!! We are all a family here working together. Athletics is just another part of that family tree.
39
Parent Expectations One of the best ways you can show support to your child is to be there for them. Come to their games. Cheer THEM on and do not settle for degrading the other team or referees. Encourage them to give max effort and have the best attitude at all times. Never compare them to another athlete. Instead, encourage them to do the best THEY can do. Volunteer when possible to be involved with their interests Please pick up your child from practices and games as quickly as possible.
40
Coaching Staff at East Coaches are educators who make decisions based on what they believe to be the best for all student-athletes and the educational goals of Coppell ISD. Certain concerns are appropriate to discuss with your child’s coach. Other areas, such as those listed below, must be left to the discretion of the coach. Playing time Team strategy Play calling Other student-athletes There are situations that may require a conference between coach and player, or coach and parent. These conferences are encouraged. It is important that all parties involved have a clear understanding of the other’s position. When a conference is necessary, the procedure outlined on the following page should be useful in resolving concerns.
41
Parents – Coach Interactions
IF YOU HAVE A CONCERN TO DISCUSS WITH A COACH PLEASE FOLLOW THE PROCEDURE BELOW Call or the Coach with whom you wish to speak. Request a time to meet with the coach. Please do not attempt to confront a coach before or after a contest or practice. These can be emotional times for the parent, athlete and the coach. Meetings of this nature usually do not promote positive resolutions. THE NEXT STEP in order of action - What can a parent do if the meeting with the coach does not prove a satisfactory resolution? Call the Campus Athletic Coordinator to discuss the situation (Ryan Melson). Call the Principal for guidance regarding the next step (Steve Glover). Call the District Athletic Director or Assistant Athletic Director (Kit Pehl/Nicole Jund)
42
Basic Season Policies for All Sports
Practices – Attendance at ALL PRACTICES is required to participate in that week’s game. Students that are late to practice, or have to leave early unexcused will have some exercises to make up before they can play in the next game Missing a practice with an excused absence may result in loss of playing time that week due to missing learning and not being as prepared NOT as a punishment. Missing a practice with no excuse will result in loss of playing time or loss of events in track This includes detentions, KEBs and FNLs. It is expectation our student-athletes be model students who represent our school. PLEASE MAKE ANY AND ALL APPOINTMENTS SO THAT THEY DO NOT CONFLICT WITH PRACTICE OR GAME TIME. We understand this is not always avoidable so please communicate with us in advance and let us know.
43
Conclusion We are looking forward to another great year here at CMS East. More than anything, please know that no decision is made until we have all decided that it is best for your children. Will it be difficult? Sometimes, yes. Athletics here in Coppell is very competitive and expectations have never been higher. While physical and mental toughness and strength will be stressed, understand that we love all of our athletes, and all of our students here and that every effort is made to insure that they have a wonderful experience in athletics in Middle School.
