The College Application Process: Getting Started
1 Ask your student to answer the following questions: What are you interested in? How do you see yourself spending your free time? What are you passionate about? How do you learn best? What do you think you want to do in the future? 2 Get to know the options. Use Naviance and College Board’s Big Future to learn about basic college categories and answer questions about college preferences to help narrow the college list. 3 Decide what matters most. For some students, sports and activities drive the college list. Other students want a challenging academic environment or a small intimate environment. Ask your student to review the answers to the questions in Step 1. Find colleges that match your student’s preferences. Search for colleges by location, majors, size and more.

What Is My Role in the College Admissions Process?
Student’s Parent’s Counselor’s Determine pathway Research schools and find your fit Talk to parents (discuss the plan, costs, and feasibility) Organize (understand admission requirements, required documents, and deadlines) Apply for admission Send test scores Apply for financial aid Talk to admission counselors Check HOPE report Ask for help Educate yourself (College Board Parent Webinars & Articles) Support & assist Track student’s progress Help set the application timeline Research the cost of attendance Communicate finances Gather tax documents for the financial aid application Assist with scholarship applications Encourage Follow up with student Help students navigate resources Counselor evaluations Letters of recommendation Track graduation requirements Meet with students Guidance Support Parents—support in a healthy way. Colleges ask us to evaluate student traits such as responsibility, initiative, and independence. If you all are ing us and requesting transcripts, there’s no legitimate way for us to evaluate John Hoya. We can only speak to Mrs. Hoya’s responsibility, initiative, and independence. Assist your student, but don’t completely take care of the tasks.
27
Parting Tips Focus on a good fit versus a “good” college.
Expect your student to do his best while remembering they are different from their friends and siblings. Anxiety is contagious. Stay calm and resist lecturing. Ask your child what her plan is for studying, writing essays, and completing applications. Visit college campuses. Visits are critical in the decision-making process. Talk about finances early and truthfully. Contact the college admissions and financial aid offices for answers to questions. Colleges communicate with students via . As soon as your student decides which college he or she will attend, have them set that account up in their phone. They should check that account often. Colleges will rescind offers of admission. Enjoy this time with your student. Time flies in senior year, and before you know it, you will find yourself mailing graduation invitations. First point—apply to the colleges truly interested in. Don’t waste time and money on applications for schools where the student truly doesn’t want to attend.
