3. Natural Disasters A major event resulting from natural processes
Examples:
Floods
Earthquakes
Wildfires

4. So how can we prepare for these?
Man made disasters
Make sure all technology and parts are working (faulty equipment on planes)
Know the plans in place if they are to happen (evacuations, etc)
Natural Disasters
Watch for signs that they’re coming (hurricanes, earthquakes, etc)
Know the plans put in place if they happen (evacuations, etc)

5. What can engineers do? GPS Tracking of storms
Build buildings to withstand the disasters
Study flood plains and figure out a better way to handle all that water

Use the internet and research and select a disaster
Create a Presentation with the following items:
Explain why it is either natural or human-made environmental disaster and tell what happened (4-6 sentences) ____/9
List possible causes of the disaster (at least 3) ___/9
Tell me the problems resulting from the disaster (at least 3) ____/9
Describe where you think the system failed and what could have been done to prevent those problems from happening (5-7 sentences) ____/9
How can lessons learned from this disaster assist with better forecasting, preparation and/or reconstruction after the tragedy? (5-7 sentences) ____/9

7. Big Bad Wolf Activity
You have 20 minutes to create a structure with the supplies provided
It must be attached to the base and have the roof attached as well
We will test durability of the structure with the fan – we’ll see if it will stay standing after 30 seconds of air blowing on it

11. Your job: Create a newspaper front page about your disaster
Your newspaper’s name must be appropriate and original and placed at the top of the front page (ex. London Times, The European Journal, Raleigh Gazette).
Create/Find/Modify at least 3 full color pictures that illustrate some part of the events that you picked
Two articles must be written that highlights the major significance of your disaster. The articles must be at least one paragraph in length and include an appropriate headline.
An opinion section must be included in your newspaper that features someone’s opinion on a significant event connected to your topic. You must write that person’s opinion as if he or she/he lived through the event. It must be one paragraph in length

Humanitarian services that help people in need following a natural disaster
