1 The Plant Kingdom

2 Plant Classification Domain: Eukaryota Kingdom: Plantae
Cell type: eukaryotic Cell number: multicellular Feeding: autotrophic (photosynthesis) Reproduction: Seeds/spores

3 The Plant Kingdom This kingdom has organisms that are multi-cellular, have cell walls and chlorophyll, produce their own food, and don’t physically move from one place to another.

4 Plant Classification Plants evolved from green algae (protists)
They are first classified as Nonvascular – short plants with no transport tissue (like veins), e.g. moss Vascular – taller plants with veins, e.g. trees Xylem – veins for water Phloem – veins for food

5 Non-Vascular plants that do not have tubes to carry water up the plant or tubes to carry food made in the leaves down the plant Examples: mosses liverworts ferns hornworts

6 Non-Vascular Spore: the reproductive cell of a nonvascular plant
SPORES!

7 Non-Vascular Moss

8 Non-Vascular Liverwort

9 Non-Vascular Fern

10 Non-Vascular Hornwort

11 Vascular Plants that have tubes to carry water up and food down the plant Examples: American dogwood tree roses grass

12 Vascular American dogwood tree

13 Vascular Roses

14 Vascular Grass

15 Plant Classification Vascular Plants can further be classified as
Gymnosperms – cone bearing plants, e.g. pine trees Angiosperms – flowering plants, e.g. roses

16 Plant Classification Angiosperms are classified as
Flowering plants Covered seed FRUIT or FLOWERS Regardless of type, flowers are great for reproduction. Flowers attract animals that can help pollinate the plant.

17

18 Plant Classification Gymnosperms are classified as Cone bearing
Open seed PINECONES

20 Photosynthesis Plant cells produce their own food through a process called photosynthesis. Photosynthesis allows plants to convert light energy into food energy.
