13 Subcommittee on Well Cements (SC10) New Document Status:
Two key considerations in our document strategy Revision of existing documents to stay current with technology and industry change. Development of new documents to address existing gaps in existing documentation. Revision of existing documents: Revision of API Specification 10A, 24th Edition, December 2010, “Specification for Cements and Materials for Well Cementing” 25th Edition Ballot closed 12 January Document is currently in the API Publications queue. Revision of API RP 10B-2, Second Edition, April 2013, “Recommended Practice for Testing Well Cements” Document currently under revision using updates from API Spec 10A as foundation for changes.

14 Subcommittee on Well Cements (SC10) New Document Status:
Revision of API RP 10B-6, First Edition, August 2010, “Recommended Practice on Determining the Static Gel Strength of Cement Formulations”, Document revision is underway by Work Group. Work Group includes research element to better understand the measurement techniques and how they relate to one another. Revision of API RP 10D, Sixth Edition March 2002, “Specification for Bow Spring Casing Centralizers” Document revision currently underway by Work Group to include performance testing requirements for centralizers that are to be used in applications where they are run through restrictions that are smaller than the hole size in which they are to be set. Revision of API RP 10F, 3rd Edition, April 2002 “Performance Testing of Cementing Float Equipment” WG will publish rewrite as API Specification 10F, 4th Edition This document will include required specifications and the associated performance testing protocols for the manufacturing of Cement Float Equipment. Document is now in the API publication the queue.

15 Subcommittee on Well Cements (SC10) New Document Status:
Revision of API RP 65-1, 1st Edition, “Cementing Shallow Water Flow Zones in Deepwater Wells”, September 2002 Document is currently in page proof expected publishing date Summer 2018 as API Standard 65-1. Revision of API Technical Report 10TR1 Second Edition, September 2008, “Cement Sheath Evaluation” WG established and document is currently under revision to add key missing elements such as cement verification using surface indicators. Revision of API Bulletin E3, 1st Edition, Environmental Guidance Document, January 1993, “Well Abandonment and Inactive Well Practices for U.S. Exploration and Production Operations” Published 2nd Edition, April 1, 2018 New document indented to fill current gap in the industry until a new API RP can be developed.

16 Subcommittee on Well Cements (SC10) New Document Status:
New documents under development: Creation of API Technical Report “Stage Cementing Equipment” Intended to fill current gap in SC 10 documents and lay foundation for a potential future specification. Creation of API RP 65-3, 1st Edition, “Well Abandonments.” Intended to fill current gap in SC 10 documents. Creation of API Technical Report “Foam Cement Behavior Under Well Conditions” Intended to summarize field work and testing conducted within the WG. Creation of API Technical Report “Triaxial Mechanical Properties of Cement and Testing Procedures ” Creation of API Technical Report “Testing Procedures for Measuring the HTHP Rheology of Cement Slurries”

17 Subcommittee on Well Cements (SC10) New Document Status:
New documents under development: Creation of API Technical Report “Comparison of Conditioning Practices for Cement” Intended to improve procedures in existing SC 10 documents and lay foundation for a potential future modifications of existing documentation.

20 Alternative Mixing Procedure
RP 10B-2

21 Preparation of Slurries

22 The Problem Cement slurries foam
Non-foamer not effective in some cases Latex / thixotropic / high density slurries Results in testing - a lesser amount (mass) of cement slurry Excess foaming affects Thickening time tests Sedimentation Free water Rheology Compressive strength Expansion

23 Alternative Mixing Procedure cont’d

30 Way Forward?

31 Thickening Time Stirring RPMs
Why Do we stir at 150 RPMs? Old procedure for salt cement - Calvert? Do we simulate batch mixing at same RPM’s as pumping cement through Coiled tubing???? Concerned with 50 sec initial mixing RPMs but 150 rpms is ok for long thickening times? 10 hours = 36,000 sec Velocity changes from different well geometries ie. slurry inside casing then in annulus Thickening time test performed at 200, 150, 100 and 50 rpms. longer thickening times are recorded as RPMs are reduced. 50 RPMs – mins. 100 RPMs – 169 mins. 150 RPMs – 148 mins. 200 RPMs mins
