3 Absolute Monarchy What it is: Rulers with unlimited power. Make laws, create taxes, administer justice, control the people. (unlimited government) What it isn’t: People telling the king or queen how to rule or what to do Ex: France, Russia

4 Divine Right The king should have absolute power because God has given him that power directly.

5 Unlimited Government Power is unlimited Controls the economy
Those who make the laws are NOT required to obey them. Unlimited Government Power is unlimited Controls the economy France, Russia, Great Britain (without Parliament) Rule by ONE: Absolute Monarchy Make laws, create taxes, administer justice, control the people

Have documents that state laws & limitations Limited Government Government can’t take advantage of the citizens Power is limited Representative Democracy Example: U.S.A. Constitutional Monarchy Example: Great Britain Direct Democracy Example: Ancient Greece Has a system of checks & balances Examples

8 What is important about the idea of a constitutional monarchy?
Our form of government comes from the idea of a CONSTITUTIONAL monarchy!

9 How do you tell the difference between an absolute and constitutional monarchy?
Ask yourself: Is there a king or queen? Is the king or queen the only one with power? If not, who else shares the power?

10 PhotoStory Closure Look for evidence to answer:
What makes a king or queen absolute? What makes him/her constitutional?

11 Your Turn! Create your own example of an absolute or a constitutional monarch. He or she must exhibit the characteristics we learned in class of that type of monarch. Be specific! You Need: Visual (labeled with at least 5 characteristics) Paragraph explaining how he/she is an example of that type of monarch
