2 The Cabinet The heads of the 15 executive departments make up the president’s cabinet. This group advises the president. Departments: State, Treasury, Defense, Justice, Interior, Agriculture, Commerce, Labor, Health and Human Services, Housing and Urban Development, Transportation, Energy, Education, Veterans Affairs

8 Department of Defense (1949)*

Brings forth cases on behalf of Nation Responsible for all aspects of law enforcement Current attorney general- Jeff Sessions

10 Department of Interior (1849)
Manages and protects the nation’s public lands and natural resources Also, Bureau of Indian Affairs Current secretary- Ryan Zinke

11 Department of Agriculture (1889)
Assists farmers and consumers of farm products USDA, Food Inspection, Subsidies Current secretary- Sonny Purdue (has yet to be confirmed)

Supervises trade, promotes United States tourism, and businesses Patents, Census Bureau Current secretary- Wilbur Ross

17 Department of Energy (1977)
Directs and implements the nation’s energy plan and consumption Petroleum, Coal, Natural Gas, Nuclear energy Current secretary- Rick Perry

18 Department of Education (1979)
Provides advice and funding to school districts through state grants Current secretary- Betsy DeVos

19 Department of Veterans Affairs (1989)
Directs services for American’s veterans Current secretary- David Shulkin

20 Department of Homeland Security (2002)

28 Criticisms of the Bureaucracy
It is inefficient There is a lot of red tape: “maze of government rules, regulations and paperwork” It is wasteful because it usually fails to address the problem at hand.
