1 Focused skill week 1 task 2 Work 2
By Ameera Thind

2 Introduction The purpose of making this power point was to explain my current ability of the production using the chosen focused skill of ‘Camera’ which I have clearly detailed answering the questions from the brief in the portfolio which is my main source of placing my work into. I have mentioned in the Task 2 section for the first week in the portfolio that the reader will need to refer to this power point document to see how I think the skill ‘Camera’ in the production of previous projects made by me best demonstrate my current ability considering the skills I have picked up to do what I can with the ‘Camera’. This document is purely just to refer to along side the portfolio which is where I have answered the questions: What is the skill you want to showcase? You have to say why this is your focused skill? As said in my portfolio I am looking at the skill of using the ‘Camera’ in production however there are numerous skills within this consisting of framing/shot types, knowing the basic terminology and knowledge of using a camera, angles, camera movement, use of location within the frame/sets, shutter speed (how fast/slow the shutter is). Since I have made a show reel not all of my previous projects include all of these aspects as I want to focus just on the ones which are relevant to my subject and the skill in general. I have decided to focus on camera movement and framing in particular (shot types). However I will be thinking about the other elements as my research and specialized study develops as well as incorporating some parts of semiology when it comes to coming up with a research question.

3 My Video show reel representing the skill “camera”
I have inserted my video show reel in my portfolio as an embedded video along side a link which will directly take you to the video which I uploaded to my YouTube channel. I have also included this whole slideshow document in my portfolio just in case opening this document didn’t work then the reader could refer to it on the portfolio. On the next slide I have detailed and screen grabbed shots from the show reel which I think are the most important to show my current ability in terms with what I can do with the “Camera” especially use of camera movement and framing (shot types) but also use of the location. Some of the shots I am in however I practiced the positioning and actual practice of the shot before filming as this is my strength as well as some which I have filmed myself and created shots using my creativeness and skills to do so. Here is the link to my video show reel of demonstrating the use of the skill “Camera” on my YouTube channel:

4 My current ability representing the use of the “camera” skill in previous projects
(Ameera T, 2019) (Ameera T, 2019) (Ameera T, 2019) For the next three slides I have included the key shots from the previous projects which I have included in my video show reel which I think best represent the use of the skill, ‘Camera’. Firstly you have picture one which is from my “Lunch” project I started to develop my perspective shots here. I like the use of these as it makes the audience feel more included and involved with the scene. My ability with these shots is strong I know how to create them without making them look too fake and shaky especially because these shots can be achieved by holding the camera hand held. You then have image two which is from my “Packing” project, I really liked using and practicing my perspective shots as I knew I could confidently achieve them in a film. But here I have incorporate angles and how they can make characters feel less superior by using the low high angle looking down. I like this use of camera skill particularly – the shutter speed was slow for this shot as I wanted to keep the audience engaged with what the character would be doing next. Lastly, image three is an over the shoulder the way which the camera is positioned for the shots used in this project “Camera techniques” was interesting to create as we had to position the camera so it could you see both the foreground and background to express the location which it was in.

5 My current ability representing the use of the “camera” skill in previous projects
5 4 6 (Ameera T 2019) (Ameera T, 2019) (Ameera T, 2019) Image four is taken from my Final major project from the first year where I began expressing the use of the knowledge I knew from just learning and picking up as this was the point in time where I had just started the course. This was where I incorporated the use of angling to show the whole set and location for example using a wide angled/low shot I could include the whole surrounding of where I was filming. The fifth image is from a recent project of mine called the “Packing project” it is actually when I involved Camera movement which I have used before in some of my projects. Camera movement can add another dimension to the way the camera portrays the story especially tracking shots which is a way of creating movement in a film/video as you can use the camera to follow a character in some way. Lastly image six is from my “Friendship project”, the use of establishing shots in particular the one in this image are used to dramatize the sets and location which the film is in. Pans are commonly used and are also a way of moving the camera in a different sense, I have included this in some of my films to see whether this gives off a different approach or message.

6 My current ability representing the use of the “camera” skill in previous projects
8 7 9 (Ameera T, 2019) (Ameera T, 2019) (Ameera T, 2019) Image seven is from my “Copy, Transform and Combine project” where I recreated a scene from the TV show ‘Broadchurch (2013 – 2017)’. As shown in the image this was where I wanted to blend shot what I mean by this was that I would have a tracking shot (way of camera movement) which would blend into an establishing shot (shot type). I would start to emphasis this towards the end of the film. Image eight was the idea of panning (camera movement) and how characters can be introduced, the location wasn’t necessarily the key focus here but mainly the introduction of the subjects in frame like the props. Lastly, image nine is how the use of camera equipment can be used to follow a certain feature from a character.

7 Conclusion Images one to nine are a mixture of shots which are taken by me on the day of filming or either I have appeared in some of the shots which suggests that I practiced them and came up with the camera idea in terms of where I wanted to position the camera in order to achieve the perfect imagery for the screen. Some of the shots shown in the reel I took myself and created the look I wanted to convey for the story/narrative for the audience to feel. All of the shots mentioned in the previous three slides all had an impact on developing my ability in work in using a “Camera” and just having the basic abilities of functioning a “Camera” especially fitting in a subject in frame using the suitable shot types. I know all of my shot types and my overall camera knowledge is of a really high standard, I can easily identify these and using the correct terminology is no problem for me. A lot of aspects that go into the usage of the “Camera” especially functioning the “Camera”, using camera movements to add a different perspective, using props to add fine details to the imagery for the screen and lastly making sure the subject whether this is a person or object to be fully in frame unless this is done deliberately where a close up of them or it is shown to showcase a certain meaning/message or even a certain focus towards the audience which I have done numerous times particularly in my “Packing” project. My currently ability has been clearly shown in the video show reel which I hope to expand and develop on as I keep producing projects for my own especially using the “Camera” skill with framing, angling, location etc. Since my focused skill is “Camera” within this I will be focusing my research fully based off skills within this which make up using and relate to my subject (research question) in some way which is use of camera movement and how framing can frame and subject within the frame. The skill itself will someway link with my research question and have it’s own element when it comes to me constructing the question so that all of my research links with my focused skill and subject of “Bollywood”.
