2 More information: www.hcpss.org/scta
VISION: Every student and staff member embraces diversity and possesses the skills, knowledge and confidence to positively influence the larger community. MISSION: HCPSS ensures academic success and social-emotional well-being for each student in an inclusive and nurturing environment that closes opportunity gaps. More information: VALUE Marsha I added this from Julia’s ppt. Superintendent Michael Martirano has established a bold Strategic Call to Action to guide our school system. “Learning and Leading with Equity” is a strategic plan for building an instructional program to enable every student to reach their greatest potential. HCPSS is focusing our resources and priorities to make certain that every child graduates from high school and is prepared for the world of work and ready to enter college. The Strategic Call to Action embodies four commitments to each student, staff member, parent, and community member: We VALUE every stakeholder, whether student, employee, parent, or community member. We commit to ACHIEVEMENT by supporting every person in our system - both students and staff -  in reaching milestones for personal growth that are appropriate to their goals and strengths. We CONNECT with students, parents and community members in ways that nurture and restore. We EMPOWER schools, employees, families, and community members to actively support student achievement and well‐being. ACHIEVE EMPOWER CONNECT

10 Homework Marsha

11 HOMEWORK Students will have homework daily. Monday - Thursday.
You do not need to sign their agenda books. Each night students will have: Reading for at least 20 minutes Students will be expected to write the title of the book they are reading in their agenda books. Math Other assignments as needed Marsha Writing the title is a 3rd grade standard

12 WHY 20 MINUTES? Marsha

13 HOMEWORK If a student does not complete his/her homework, he/she will get a homework stamp in his/her agenda book. This amount of missing homework assignments correlates to a learning behavior grade earned for the quarter. If your child is missing 5 or more homeworks in a quarter you will be contacted by his/her teacher. Marsha

14 Grading Eileen

15 GRADING This year students will earn letter grades on their report cards. Exceeds Expectations = A Meets Expectations = B Progressing Toward Expectations = C Not Meeting Expectations = D Eileen Show Rubric? Talk about quantity of work that comes home? Journals, rubrics. Not many things come home - much work completed in journals

16 GRADING Grades are determined by: Independent Work
Quality and Accuracy Average at the End of the Quarter Eileen

17 Elementary Report Card: Changes for 2019-20
Learning Behaviors Student demonstrates… Interpersonal skills Responsibility Perseverance Collaboration Initiative Reporting For each learning behavior… 1 - Meets expectations 2 - Making progress towards expectations 3 - Limited / no progress towards expectation Eileen NEW from Julia’s presentation Beginning this year, changes to Learning Behaviors will be made to your child’s report card to provide greater insights to parents/guardians. Beginning this school year, you will notice a minor modification to the Learning Behaviors section of your child’s report card. Previously, the report card included 12 learning behaviors. On the report card, closely related learning behaviors are combined into five major categories, to support parents and teachers in identifying the areas of focus. These will identify how the student is demonstrating: Interpersonal Skills Responsibility Perseverance Collaboration Initiative

18 Class Dojo Eileen

19 CLASS DOJO What is Class Dojo?
Class Dojo helps teachers positively encourage students in class, easily communicate with parents, and empower students by promoting positive feedback. This year it will be implemented school- wide. Demo Class Eileen County guidelines - not to communicate through Dojo Letter home explaining how to join Make sure I get Courtney’s help with video:)

20 Instructional Shifts Pam

21 Language Arts in 3rd Grade
Reading Independent Daily Reading (IDR) Guided Reading Flexible Groupings Student Choice Building Stamina Writing Being a Writer Building stamina Mentor texts for grammar and language mechanics Building Vocabulary Pam Difference in shift to intermediate With IDR student choice is key and we guide them toward making good decisions on books that are just right for them Talk about writing about reading and link back to the journals and grading via rubric We will still have reading groups to work on skills and strategies in reading As we start the year, we will be building our reading stamina for reading for longer periods of time. If you are familiar with Daily Five, this is a natural progression In Writing we are also building stamina and will be writing in journals and working with a combination of writing instruction and independent writing. We enjoy celebrating our authors in a variety of ways, both in class and with the team.

22 MATH Groupings: Structure: Small Group Rotations Routines
Students are grouped in math based on their instructional levels. As a team, we consistently look at a variety of student data and make changes if necessary. Keep in mind, student placement goes beyond computational and fact fluency. We also look to see if students demonstrate: Standards for Mathematical Practices Risk taking, initiative, problem solving, flexible thinking skills, etc. MATH Structure: Small Group Rotations Routines Hands-On Tasks & Problem Solving Writing in Math Marsha Explain first week tasks & quarter 1 being review/extension please give us time to get to know them as mathematicians Another teacher - not necessarily “strongest” class; no GT in 3rd grade

23 CONTENT Each quarter students will be instructed in Social Studies, Science, and Health. These are this year’s units. SOCIAL STUDIES Why do communities change? What is our place in this place? How are we connected? How can we change our community? SCIENCE Life Cycles & Traits Weather & Climate Forces & Interactions Plant & Animal Survival HEALTH Social & Emotional Health Safety & First Aid Disease Prevention & Control Tobacco, Alcohol, and Other Drugs Marsha Standards for reading and writing are embedded in content Integration of writing and reading in content areas journaling
