There is no change to the weighting of the Question Paper and the practical assessment: it remains at 20%:80%

4. Course Structure
The Course structure comprises of three components marked out of 250
Component 1: Question Paper – 50 marks (20%)
Component 2: Expressive Portfolio – 100 marks (40%)
Component 3: Design Portfolio – 100 marks (40%)

The overall structure of the Question Paper remains the same with 12 questions split equally between:
– Section 1: Expressive Art Studies
– Section 2: Design Studies
Candidates will attempt one mandatory and one optional question from each section

8. Question Paper: Mandatory Questions
Content previously only assessed in the units has been added to Questions 1 and 7
Questions 1 and 7 now include a part (b) which asks about the impact of social, cultural and/or other influences on the work and practice of artists and designers
Part (b) is worth up to 5 marks, increasing the total for the mandatory questions to 15 marks each

The overall marks allocation for the Question Paper has increased from 40 to 50 marks to reflect new content

The Course Specification document contains:
– examples of question paper prompts
– examples of social, cultural and other influences which impact on artists’ and designers’ work and practice
The Specimen Question Paper and Marking Instructions will be published by September 2017

The removal of Unit Assessment has led to amendments to the Portfolio Assessment tasks
Investigation and initial development previously assessed in the units is now included in the Portfolio
Marking Instructions have been restructured

16. Expressive and Design Portfolios (cont)
The Assessment tasks will be set by centres under the conditions specified by SQA
Portfolios will be externally marked by SQA
Portfolios will be uplifted at the end of April

17. Expressive and Design Portfolios (cont)
The Portfolio format continues to offer centres flexibility. However, Portfolios must:  
not be any bigger than three A2 size, single-sided sheets or equivalent
fold to a size not exceeding A1

The evaluation for each Portfolio must:  
be completed on the mandatory SQA template
be attached to the first sheet
not overlap any other work or extend beyond the three A2 sheets or equivalent

20. Expressive Portfolio Assessment task
The Expressive Portfolio Assessment task requires candidates to:
agree a theme/stimulus
produce relevant 2D/3D analytical drawings, studies and investigative research
demonstrate a single line of development
produce a Final Piece
evaluate their creative process

21. Design Portfolio Assessment task
The Design Portfolio Assessment task requires candidates to:
agree a design brief
produce and compile relevant 2D/3D investigative material and market research
demonstrate a single line of development
produce a Design Solution
evaluate their creative process

22. Portfolios: Marking Instructions
The Marking Instructions for both the Expressive and Design portfolios have been restructured to reflect the intentions of the revised Assessment tasks
The Marking Instructions for each portfolio contain three sections:
Section 1 – Process (40 marks)
Section 2 – Skills (50 marks)
Section 3 – Evaluation (10 marks)

23. Expressive Portfolio: Process
Candidates will be assessed on their ability to:
produce relevant 2D/3D analytical drawings, studies and investigative research appropriate to the selected theme/stimulus (10 marks)
demonstrate a single line of development showing visual continuity and the refinement of one idea leading to the realisation of a Final Piece
(30 marks)

24. Expressive Portfolio: Skills
Candidates will be assessed on their ability to:
use a selection of materials, techniques and/or technology for creative effect in response to the theme/stimulus (25 marks)
use appropriate visual elements and expressive effects creatively (for example: composition; lighting; viewpoint; mood and atmosphere) in response to the theme/stimulus (25 marks)

25. Expressive Portfolio: Evaluation
Candidates will be assessed on their ability to:
give justified personal opinions on the decisions made when working through their portfolio and the effectiveness of the visual qualities of their portfolio, referring to their theme/stimulus
(10 marks)

26. Design Portfolio: Process
Candidates will be assessed on their ability to:
produce and compile relevant 2D/3D investigative material and market research appropriate to the design brief/design area (10 marks)
demonstrate a single line of development showing visual continuity and the refinement of one idea leading to the realisation of a Design Solution
(30 marks)

27. Design Portfolio: Skills
Candidates will be assessed on their ability to:
use a selection of materials, techniques and/or technology for aesthetic and functional effect as appropriate to the design brief (25 marks)
demonstrate understanding of appropriate design elements (for example: aesthetics; style; layout; visual elements; function; safety; balance) in response to the design brief (25 marks)

28. Design Portfolio: Evaluation
Candidates will be assessed on their ability to:
give justified personal opinions on the decisions made when working through their portfolio and the effectiveness of the aesthetic and functional qualities of their portfolio, referring to their design brief requirements
(10 marks)
