2 Why are we conducting this workshop?  To set the standards for assessment level 1 & 2.  To train students according to the new assessment criteria.  To know DO and DON’TS for conducting speaking exam.  To have a clear picture about the procedures of conducting the speaking test.  To practice using the Marking Rubric.

6 1.The examiner asks the same topics to the majority of test takers. 2.The examiner covers only 2 topics when conducting the speaking test. 3. Ahmed (Test taker) was asked to talk about outdoor activities that he likes to do on the weekend. Ahmed did not ask about the meaning of ‘outdoor’. However, the examiner gave the meaning. 4. Ahmed was asked a question and he showed or expressed lack of understanding. Does the examiner have to repeat the question for the first time? 5. The examiner repeated the question again for Ahmed but he still did not answer. Does the examiner repeat the question for the second time? Part 1 – Introduction and Interview (2 to 3 minutes)

7 1.Ask a variety of questions. Be sure to alternate topics between different task takers. 2. Two topics should be covered (minimum). 3. Do not explain any vocabulary unless the test taker asks for the meaning of a specific word.

8 4. If test takers express or indicate lack of understanding, repeat the question. 5. If test takers still express or indicate lack of understanding, or do not respond at all after the question has been repeated for the second time, then move on to the next question. 6. If a test taker willingly terminate the examination before you have completed all 3 parts, (perhaps by standing up and expressing Lack of understanding and then leaving the room) then award a mark of zero. Part 1 – Introduction and Interview (2 to 3 minutes)

(How do you spend your free time?) -How do you like to spend your free time? -Where do you spend your free time? -Who do you spend your free time with? Let’s talk about your friends. -Do you make friends easily? -Who is your best friend? Why? -Where is a good place to meet new friends? -What do you usually do with your best friends?

My name is …………and I’m your examiner. My colleague is here to listen and will not be asking you questions. (indicate colleague). Can you tell me your full name, please? And can I see your identification? Thank you. That’s fine. Now, in this first part of the test, I’d like to ask you some questions about yourself. Let’s talk about………

12 Why part 2 (Asking Questions) is introduced to the Speaking Exam?  L.O2 : Can ask and answer simple questions related to jobs, stages of academic study, places and people, and to simple activities (Level 1).

13 Part 2 – Asking questions (2 to 3 minutes) 1.Use one situation (shopping) per test taker. 2. Vary the use of situations. Do not always use the situations in the order in which they appear. In other words, do not always use Situation 1 with the first test taker and then Situation 2 with the second test taker. 3. If test-takers express or indicate a lack of understanding, follow this procedure: a)Repeat the answer. b)Provide the question word. c)Provide the question word and verb. d)Say ” thank you” and move onto the next part.

14 Examiner: I am planning to buy a car. Test taker: What are you planning to buy? Examiner: I am going to buy it this month. Test taker: When are you going to buy it? Examiner: It will cost 7000R.O Test taker: How much will it cost? Examiner: I will be Hyundai Elentra 2017. Test taker: Which model will you buy? Situation 1

15 Examiner: I like to watch English movies on TV. Test taker: What kind of movies do you like to watch on TV? Examiner: No. I do not like to go to cinema. Test taker: Do you like to go to cinema? Examiner: I watch English movies four times a week. Test taker: How often do you watch English movies? Examiner: I usually have popcorn when I am watching movies. Test taker: What do you usually have when you are watching movies? Situation 2 (Level 2)

16 Examiner Script: Say this EXAXCTLY as scripted and try to say it in such a way that you appear NOT to be reading. Speak slowly and clearly throughout the exam. In this part, I want you to ask me questions. I will give you the answers and you ask me the questions. For example, if I say ‘I am from England’, what is the question? [Wait for the test taker’s response]. And if I say ‘I am a teacher’, What is the question? [Wait for the test taker’s response]. If the test-taker cannot answer, tell the test taker what the correct questions should be ?(i. the question is..) Now, we will begin. [If the test taker does not understand, repeat the instruction with the examples only]. [If the test taker can not complete a question after enough time has been given, move onto the next, and so on]. After the prompt has been given, if test takers express or indicates lack of understanding, follow the examiner instruction #3

17 Part 3 2-3 minutes

18 Part 3 – Picture Description (2 to 3 minutes) 1.Use one picture with each test taker. Do not use the same picture twice. 2. Do not speak while the test taker is speaking, but use gesture and/or vocational to encourage the test taker to keep going. 3. If the test taker stops speaking before the one minute has elapsed, say: ’Can you tell me anything else about this?’. 4.No follow-up questions are asked in this part.

Now, I am going to give you a picture and I’d like you to talk about it for one minute. Before you talk, you will have one minute to think about what you are going to say. Do you understand? Here is you picture (hand the test taker the picture). After one minute… Now remember, you have one minute for this. I'll tell you when the time is up. Can you start speaking now, please. Thank you. Can I have the picture back, please?

22 Level 2: Part 3  Instructions  Directions  Telling a story

23 Part 3 Giving instructions, Directions or telling story (level 2)  Use one request for instructions, directions or telling story with each test taker. Do not use the same task twice.  Do not speak while the test taker is speaking, but use gesture and/or vocalization to encourage the test taker to keep going.  Do not explain any vocabulary unless the test taker asks for a specific word or visual.  If the test taker stops speaking before the task has been completed, say “can you tell me anything else?  No follow up questions are asked in this part.

Here is your instruction sequence, and a pencil and a paper for making notes (hand the test taker the instructions sequence and a pencil and a paper). I’d like you to tell me how to (TASK TITLE). After one minute Now remember, you have2 minutes for this. I’ll tell you when time is up. Can you start speaking now, please. Thank you. Can I have the instructions sequence and the pencil and paper back, please? (Return the instruction sequence to the file on the correct order) Thank you. This is the end of the speaking test.

Here is a pencil and a paper for making notes and here is (hand the test taker the instructions sequence and a pencil and a paper). After 1 minute…. Now,remember, you have 2 minutes to speak. I’ll tell you when the time is up. Can you start speaking now, please? I’d like you to tell me the story. Thank you. Can I have the picture sequence and the pencil and paper back, please? (Return the picture sequence to the file in the correct order) Thank you. This is the end of the speaking test.
