WELCOME ON BOARD!!!

GENERAL ORGANIZATION WHAT: CLASSES WHEN: ON WEDNESDAYS : 2.PM – 3,30 PM WHERE : LANGUAGE LAB HOW: TRYING TO TALK, TALK, TALK, NO MATTER HOW “PERFECT” YOU ARE

CLASS SCHEDULE Introducing the topic (only today!) Ten minutes brainstorming on useful vocabulary Role-play / reading / video Discussion Language & grammar analysis Introducing next week’s topic

Today’s topic : If you want to... Warm-up activities If you want to practice, talk even if you don't say things perfectly! If you want to understand what I'm saying, you have to listen carefully. If we want to do a good job, we should speak in turns. If you don't know a word, why don't you use its definition? If you still can't explain yourself, I will guide you. classroom sentence.docx

Role-play Now build an “if you want to “ situation and say it to the person sitting next to you, wait for a feedback. Feedback is very important because it shows that a person has understood what we are meaning.

Useful expressions for a good feedback That's a good idea. I certainly will. You're perfectly right. I agree with you. Good observation. That's a good point. I agree with you only partially, (because...) I don't fully agree with you, (because...) I don't really understand why you are saying so. Are you really sure? I'm not sure... I'm in complete disagreement (because...) Our opinions are different, (because....)

Discussion 1 Look at the photocopy: These are statements made by English students. TASK : Examine the text: How many words can you find that mean “fashionable”? Are boy bands “in” or “out”? What don't you do in GB when you join a queue of people? What are the coolest things to wear now among teenagers in England? What can you do to your eyebrows, if you want to be cool?

Discussion 2 Do you think our Italian students are similar/the same? What is “cool” for them? How should a teacher/parent react? How important is to be cool at their age? Why? And now, what is cool for an adult?* What changes in an individual's personality? What does it depend on (family, education, friends, job, social status)? Try to answer these questions, and if you can't find a word or phrase, ask us. * LOOK AT THE PHOTOCOPY

Reflection on the language we have been using today We have used: If + present simple (never use it with the future) Imperative ---> used to give instructions Have to = periphrasis of must ---> used to give strong recommendations* Should = conditional of have to/must ---> used to give advice * Present simple ----> used for general statements/habits/repetitive actions Future simple ---> used for the consequences of a hypothesis * FLASH CARDS

USEFUL SENTENCES/ GIVING ADVICE Semi-formal phrases: I think you should + infinitive … I don’t think you should… Maybe you should + infinitive … Informal phrases: Why don’t you + infinitive … ? How about + verb-ing … ? Why not + gerund (verb-ing)…

Next week’s topic what's in a name (W. Shakespeare) Family and friends Descriptions Names are given after a relative, a place, a famous person, for religious reasons, etc. In nomen omen Expressions used to show interest

A little feedback Mark the following questions with a score from 1 to 5, where 1 means NOT AT ALL and 5 means COMPLETELY How did you like this class? Was it what you were expecting? Was the material useful? Was the information clear? Did you talk enough? Have you learnt new words/expressions? Did you have fun? Is the level of the class suitable for you? Do you like next week's topic?
