All About Dissolving

3 What is dissolving? When a solid (eg :sugar) becomes a part of a liquid (eg: water), the solid is said to be dissolved in the liquid.

4 What is dissolving? When a solid (eg :sugar) becomes a part of a liquid (eg: water), the solid is said to be dissolved in the liquid.

5 Did the sugar disappear?
No, the sugar is still present in the water.

6 Did the sugar disappear?
No, the sugar is still present in the water. But how? A sugar particle is very small [a handful of sugar can contain about two billion pieces], therefore about six particles of sugar stick to each molecule of water. It is not visible by our plain eyes.

7 Did the sugar disappear?
No, the sugar is still present in the water. But how? A sugar particle is very small [a handful of sugar can contain about two billion pieces], therefore about six particles of sugar stick to each molecule of water. It is not visible by our plain eyes. How can we know if sugar is present in the water? By tasting the drink

8 Do all solids dissolve in a liquid?

9 Do all solids dissolve in a liquid?
No, not all solids dissolve in liquids.

10 Do all solids dissolve in a liquid?
No, not all solids dissolve in liquids. Some solids that dissolve: Salt, sugar, coffee granules Some solids that don’t dissolve: Sand, marbles, pencil shavings

11 Scientific Terms

12 Scientific Terms Solution: When a solid dissolves in a liquid, a solution is formed. Eg: When salt dissolves in water, it is called a salt solution

13 Scientific Terms Solution: When a solid dissolves in a liquid, a solution is formed. Eg: When salt dissolves in water, it is called a salt solution Solvent: The liquid that has a dissolved solid in it is called a solvent

14 Scientific Terms Solution: When a solid dissolves in a liquid, a solution is formed. Eg: When salt dissolves in water, it is called a salt solution Solvent: The liquid that has a dissolved solid in it is called a solvent Solute: The solid part of a solution is called a solute

15 Scientific Terms Solution: When a solid dissolves in a liquid, a solution is formed. Eg: When salt dissolves in water, it is called a salt solution Solvent: The liquid that has a dissolved solid in it is called a solvent Solute: The solid part of a solution is called a solute Dissolve: When a solid becomes part of a liquid, it is said to be dissolved in it

16 Scientific Terms Solution: When a solid dissolves in a liquid, a solution is formed. Eg: When salt dissolves in water, it is called a salt solution Solvent: The liquid that has a dissolved solid in it is called a solvent Solute: The solid part of a solution is called a solute Dissolve: When a solid becomes part of a liquid, it is said to be dissolved in it Insoluble: If a solid doesn’t dissolve in a liquid, the solid is insoluble. Eg: Sand doesn’t dissolve in water

17 Scientific Terms Solution: When a solid dissolves in a liquid, a solution is formed. Eg: Sand doesn’t dissolve in water Soluble: If a solid dissolves in a liquid, it is a soluble solid

18 What is meant by the term saturation point?
When the solvent cannot dissolve any more solute, it is said to be a saturated solution. Just like if you fill water in a glass and it cannot take any more water, it is also said to be saturated.

19 What is meant by the term saturation point?
When the solvent cannot dissolve any more solute, it is said to be a saturated solution. Just like if you fill water in a glass and it cannot take any more water, it is also said to be saturated.

20 What happens after a solution is saturated?

21 What happens after a solution is saturated?
It depends on the solute. It will either make the solution overflow and go higher or the solute will start popping out of the solution.

22 If you add sand and water and mix it, how will you separate it?

23 If you add sand and water and mix it, how will you separate it?
There are many ways of separating solids from liquids (Click here then see ‘Separating Solids from liquids’) Yes, you got it, we will use filtration!

24 Now we will test you with the
Exercises!

25 Exercise A Sue mixes sand and water and then adds salt to it. She now wants to get the salt back.

29 Exercise A - Answers Sue mixes sand and water and then adds salt to it. She now wants to get the salt back. What will she do first? Now what will she do? Did she get her salt back?

30 Exercise A - Answers Sue mixes sand and water and then adds salt to it. She now wants to get the salt back. What will she do first? She will first filter the mixture to separate the sand from the salt solution Now what will she do? Now, she has to separate the salt from the water, she will evaporate it. Did she get her salt back? Yes, she did
