Innovation, Intellectual property rights & India: Current Scenario
Economic growth Development Pharmaceutical industry in India is 3rd in terms of volume and 13 in terms of value in global ranking Innovation is defined as the process of introducing new products, services and production processes into the market place and to create new profitable enterprises and higher-paying jobs A well-balanced, affordable and reliable system of intellectual property rights has an important role to play in this process Intellectual property rights serve to protect the ..... risky investments of innovative and creative companies against potential imitators and provide key incentives to undertake such investments 11/11/2019 Prof. Kiran Kalia, Director NIPER-Ahmedabad

Innovation, Intellectual property rights & India: Current Scenario
Branded innovator products Generic products India power house of reverse engineering The expiring patent offers important opportunity to enter off patent drugs domain and with the existing scientific capabilities and skills of Indian scientist, India is often considered power house in “reverse engineering” File Idea Invention Examination 11/11/2019 Prof. Kiran Kalia, Director NIPER-Ahmedabad

Effectiveness of the intellectual property: Bottlenecks
The effectiveness of the intellectual property depends in large part on: Beyond the design of the legal framework, intellectual property can contribute effectively to knowledge-based economic development only...... if the key stakeholders in the innovation process have the capacity to actually make optimal use of the intellectual property system BUT in the leading innovative economies not all stakeholders have this capacity progress made in the design and governance of national innovation systems creation of suitable framework conditions for the financing of innovation promotion of innovative entrepreneurs and SMEs Research organizations and small and medium sized enterprises frequently lack the skills and sometimes also the incentives to manage intellectual property strategically and to maximize its impact on innovation. 11/11/2019 Prof. Kiran Kalia, Director NIPER-Ahmedabad

Challenges faced by Academic researchers in using the IP system
Most academic research results are at the stage of proof of concept or laboratory prototype and require substantial further research and development before they can be turned into a commercially viable application Protection of intellectual property (IP) generated in universities and finding suitable partner for transfer of technology through the licensing of patents, is equally important and these days research organizations are placing increasing emphasis on commercializing IP and generating revenues from it Start-ups by university employees, setting up of science parks and business incubators is desirable and may result in additional job creation however significant amount of investment is needed in such activities 11/11/2019 Prof. Kiran Kalia, Director NIPER-Ahmedabad

NIPER as foundation hubs for Innovation and technology transfer
NIPER is breeding ground for many industrially relevant and commercially scalable important innovations NIPER can be developed as: Future centre of innovations, which are not only helping other SMES and MSME for management of IPR But also provide them with necessary technical expertise in terms of commercialization It may also help them in finding and creating newer collaboration and consortium for further exploring their innovations. NIPERs can also promote several start up ventures in terms of incubation centres for its ex students and help them to become future entrepreneurs 11/11/2019 Prof. Kiran Kalia, Director NIPER-Ahmedabad

Prof. Kiran Kalia, Director NIPER-Ahmedabad
Current need NIPERs needs be developed in line with Foundation and technology transfer centre similar to those existing in IITs Government policies and programs for innovation can be tailor made to support and facilitate IP protection, coming out of such centres NIPER Ahmedabad 11/11/2019 Prof. Kiran Kalia, Director NIPER-Ahmedabad
