2 Intro Initially, the US Constitution did little to protect its citizens from actions of the states. In the 20th century, the supreme court interpreted the constitution to protect the rights of citizens from state governments in a process referred to as incorporation.

4 Selective Incorporation
Selective Incorporation is a legal code that protects rights and privileges of all citizens of the US from state laws. The supreme court follows selective incorporation and upholds individual clauses in amendments

5 Cases that Upheld Incorporation
1st amendment Cantwell v. Connecticut, 310 US 296 (1940) held that the state couldn't impose restrictions on religious grounds. Privacy Rights Mapp v. Ohio, 367 US 643 (1961) protected individuals against unreasonable search and seizure.
