Body – The material part Soul / Spirit – The non-material part MAN Ps 42:6 John 12:27 John 13:21

MAN HAS TWO PARTS – THE MATERIAL AND NON-MATERIAL And so it has been written, “The first man was A'dam in living life,” (Gen 2:7) the last A'dam has become a life-giving spirit. But the spiritual was not first but the physical. 1 Corinthians 15:45,46 One New Man Bible

MAN HAS TWO PARTS – THE MATERIAL AND NON-MATERIAL Genesis 1:26; 2:7 does not say that man is a soul, or that G-d gave man a soul; but rather that the man was “ created ” in the likeness of all the animals created on the morning of the Sixth Day. But G-d also “ imaged ” His Essence into man by breathing into the man’s nostrils a portion of His SPIRIT and therefor the man became a “living soul.” A Spirit possessing a Soul inside a Body. It is this unique combination of the body/soul blended with the breath-of-life from G-d which produced that holy spirit within the man. MATERIAL NON-MATERIAL AND

ANIMALS ALSO HAVE TWO PARTS – THE MATERIAL AND NON-MATERIAL “Whoever sheds man’s blood, By man his blood shall be shed, For in the image of G-d He made man.” (Genesis 9:6) “But these men revile the things which they do not understand; and the things which they know by instinct, like unreasoning animals, by these things they are destroyed.” (Jude 10) “But these, like unreasoning animals, born as creatures of instinct to be captured and killed, reviling where they have no knowledge, will in the destruction of those creatures also be destroyed,” (2 Peter 2:12)

MAN AND SELF REASONING G-d DIDN’T call A’dam “a man”; rather He called him a “ living soul.” Why??? Because Man will be judged by the actions of his soul not his spirit. The soul is the organ (as a matter of speech) that gives man absolute free will. G-d incorporated a holy spirit into the human body/soul to create what we would refer to as “self- consciousness” or “self-awareness”. To know G-d! All other mammals, birds, fish, plant life, etc. don’t possess self-awareness. The spirit, given of G-d, gives man reasoning and awareness of who he is.

“May the G-d of peace Himself sanctify you completely; and may your whole spirit, soul, and body be preserved blameless at the coming of our Lord Y'shua Messiah.” 1 Thess. 5:23 So Man Has Three Components

MAN The Body - World-conscious The Soul - Self conscious The Spirit - God-conscious Spirit + Soul + Body = Whole man (you) 1 Thess 5 : 23 Spirit + Soul + Joints & Marrow = Whole man (YOU) Heb 4 : 12

“And the L-RD G-d formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.” Gen. 2:7 “Then G-d said, "Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness. "So G-d created man in His own image; in the image of G-d He created him.” Gen. 1:26-27 Body Soul Spirit

“Soul” The HEBREW word is “ne’phesh” to refer to: Animal life (Genesis 1:20-21) A person (Numbers 31:19) The body (Numbers 6:6) The GREEK word is “psuche.” It may refer to: Persons or individuals (1 Peter 3:20) Life itself (John 13:38) That which exists after the body is killed (Matthew 10:28)

“Spirit” The HEBREW word is “ru’ach” It refers to: Storms and wind (Genesis 8:1) The life of breathing creatures (Genesis 6:17) Breath itself (Job 9:18) A non-fleshly intelligent being (1 Kings 22:21-22) A disposition or attitude (Ecclesiastes 7:8-9; Numbers 14:24; Ezekiel 18:31)

“Spirit” (continued) The GREEK word is “pneuma.” It may refer to: The wind (John 3:8) Breath (2 Thessalonians 2:8) The Holy Spirit (John 1:32) Unclean spirits or demons (Matt. 8:16; Luke 4:33) Angels (Hebrews 1:13-14) Character and moral qualities (1 Peter 3:4) Purpose or aim (2 Cor. 12:18; Philippians 1:27)

The soul/spirit is capable of desiring G-d (Isaiah 26:9) The soul/spirit is the part of us that truly knows us (1 Cor. 2:11; Proverbs 20:27; 1 John 3:20; Psalm 139:14) The soul/spirit experiences emotion (Psalm 35:9, 12; 1 Samuel 1:15; Luke 1:47) The soul/spirit struggles against temptation (Mark 14:38; 1 Peter 2:11) The soul/spirit of man can be saved (1 Corinthians 5:5; 1 Peter 1:9; James 1:21) The soul & spirit of man leave the body at death (Genesis 35:18; James 2:26; Ecclesiastes 12:7)

It is possible, but difficult, to make a distinction between SOUL and SPIRIT (Hebrews 4:12) The SPIRIT of man can be thought of as the life force and the SOUL can be thought as the being or person. (Genesis 2:7; Psalm 146:4; Zechariah 12:1; Mark 14:34; Luke 12:19) When SOUL & SPIRIT appear together in Scripture, focus is being placed on that part of man which is not material. (1 Thessalonians 5:23)

Mankind was made for two worlds at once… And G-d said, Let us make man (a’dam) in our image, after our likeness: Genesis 1:26 But…G-d is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in Spirit and in truth. John4:24

Body Soul Spirit And the very G-d of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray G-d your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Y'shua Messiah. 1 Thess 5:23 For the word of G-d is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. Hebrews 4:12

Unlike other mammals; we easily operate in… the physical world.

We play… We dance… We ride… We Laugh… We Cry… but we are made for more than just the physical. In the physical world …

G-d breathed into A’dam the “breath of life” in order to give him power to operate in two worlds simultaneously … the spirit world. But how? the physical world and

1. The Body  Interacts with physical world  Is the residence of soul and spirit  Formed from dust of the earth  To dust it will return - Ecc. 12:7  Does what it’s told to do; nothing more

 Maimonides deemed it obligatory to provide proper sustenance and respectful clothing for the body. Torah law goes as far as to prohibit mutilations of the body, including tattooing (Leviticus 19:27-28; Deuteronomy 23:3).  The Halakhah (Jewish law) teaches that the paramount holiness of human life extends to the human body itself. Jewish Mitzvot (commandments) cover mundane bodily matters such as clothing, eating, and sexual habits precisely because care of the body is also care for the soul. Healthcare is the maintenance and upkeep of the soul’s home. 1. The Body

2. The Soul Hebrew Hebrew - “Nephesh” 780 times in OT 28 different words used to translate. Greek Greek - “Psuche” 103 times in NT physical life principal.

2. The Soul A person's soul is the physical life principal -- that which gives animation to one's physical body; that which interprets physical stimuli {sight, sound, touch, taste, odor}; that which is the seat of emotions {love, hate, fear, anger, and so forth} relative to beings & objects in the physical realm.” - Wayne Jackson So what is the Difference Between Soul and Spirit?

2. The Soul A Person A Person – Ex. 16:16; Ezek. 18:20; 1 Pet. 3:20; Gen. 46:18; Joshua 11:11; Acts 27:37; Rom. 13:1 Life Life - Matt. 2:20 “life” of baby Y'shua. Mind Mind - Job 30:16 Uses in Bible Eg.; “eight souls were saved through water.” Eg.; “for those who sought the young Child's life are dead.” Eg.; “now my soul is poured out because of my plight; The days of affliction take hold of me.”

3. The Spirit Hebrew Hebrew - “Ruach” - 378 times in OT Breath – wind Greek Greek - “Pneuma” - 379 times in NT Breath - breeze

5. Attitude - 2 Tim. 1:7, Gal. 6:1 4. Soul - “Spirit” - 2 Cor. 4:16, Prov. 20:27 3. A person - 1 Jn. 4:1 2. Non-physical being - Jn. 4:24, Heb. 1:14 1.The air we breathe - 1 Ki. 10:4-5 3. The Spirit Uses in Bible “when the queen of Sheba had seen all the wisdom of Solomon there was no more spirit in her.” “ Are they not all ministering spirits sent forth to minister for those who will inherit salvation?” “Believe not every spirit, but prove the spirits, whether they are of G-d; because many false prophets are gone out into the world.” “Even though our outward man is perishing, yet the inward man is being renewed day by day.” “spirit of man is the lamp of Jehovah.” “For G-d hath not given us the spirit of fear.”

Man’s Soul is his life or breath:  His conscience, personality  It is who we really are in dealings  How we relate to others Gen. 2:7 NKJV NKJV “Man became a living being.” WHAT DOES ALL THIS MEAN ? “And the L-RD G-d formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul”.

Spirit of man is the immortal part  Lives beyond this earth  How you relate to G-d  Brings new life - John 3:6  Animals don’t have a spirit  Death of man - 1 Cor. 15:44, Ecc. 12:7 WHAT DOES ALL THIS MEAN ? “Then the dust will return to the earth as it was, And the spirit will return to G-d who gave it.”

Spirit of man is the G-d like part  Gen.1:27 “is His own image”  G-d is spirit - John 4:24  G-d gave us holy spirit to be Holy  Luke 23:46 - “I commit My spirit”  Acts 7:59 - “receive my spirit” WHAT DOES ALL THIS MEAN ?

 Conception ~ 1 st Death ~ 2 nd Death?  1 st death is when the soul and spirit leave the body James 2:26 WHAT DOES ALL THIS MEAN ?  The Body came from dust of earth  The Soul is the “inner man”  G-d’s breath creates a “living soul” a/k/a Spirit “the body without the spirit is dead.” Your Spirit is the highest aspect of who and what you are. Your Spirit is that part of you which is the direct creation of G-d. The Spirit knows everything and we were created in G-d’s IMAGE as spirit. But G-d not only created us in His image as spirit; but formed us from the dust of the ground in order for us to live the Human experience. And for experience to be real as in the form of all mammals, G-d provided a Soul.

 There is something within man that came from G-d ~ Living Soul WHAT DOES ALL THIS MEAN ?  We may not understand every- thing in this life  Our Soul can be saved from the 2 nd Death. Our Spirit is eternal!  “For what does it profit a man, if he gain the whole world and lose his soul?” Matthew 16:26

Might this be her soul leaving her body? If so, this could be her spirit also leaving her body? Or visa versa. Ok. This is the spirit leaving the body? And this is the soul leaving the body at death? Either order works

Your Body Your Spirit But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of G-d: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them … because they are spiritually discerned. G-d speaks to us… through our Spirit; But you will take power when the Holy Ghost comes upon you and you will be My witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judaea and Samaria and to the uttermost part of the earth. Acts 1:8 One New Man Bible Your Soul But what if “me the spirit” isn’t listening? Spirit to spirit Why do so many professing Believers limit the Holy One of Israel? Psalms 78:41 Know ye not that ye are the temple of G-d, and that the Spirit of G-d dwelleth in you? 1 Corinthians 3:16 sleep Holy Spirit

“” “ I was asleep but my heart stayed awake, ” Listen! my lover knocking, saying: “Open to me, my sister, my love, my dove, my undefiled! For my hair is filled with dew, drenched with the drops of night.” Song of Solomon 5:2-3 “How can I put it on again? I have washed my feet; How can I defile them?” Yet; “My beloved put his hand By the latch of the door, And my heart yearned for him.” So; “I [finally] arose to open for my beloved, And my hands dripp- ed with myrrh, My fingers with liquid myrrh, On the handles of the lock I opened for my beloved, But my beloved had turned away and was gone. My heart leaped up when he spoke. I sought him, but I could not find him; I called him, but he gave me no answer. The watchmen who went about the city found me. They struck me, they wounded me; The keepers of the walls took my veil away [raped] from me.” Song of Solomon 5:4-7 But “I have [already] taken off my robe;”

 Before man is regenerated, his “spirit” is far away from G-d and is separated (dead).  The “soul” controls the whole man so that he lives either in his ideas or in his excitement.  The lusts and desires of the body bring the soul into it’s subjection  To be born again is completely a matter in the spirit alone.

 Only “spirit” can serve Spirit (Romans 1:9; 7:6; 12:11).  Only “spirit” can know Spirit (1 Corinthians 2:9-12).  Only “spirit” can worship G-d in Spirit (John 4:23-24; Phil. 3:3).  Only “spirit” can receive revelation from G-d through His Spirit (Revelation 1:10; 1 Corinthians 2:10).  Receive a New Spirit (Ezekiel 36:26)

How does this New Spirit life Work? Spirit Spiritual Heart Soul Brain Body Has 5 senses: Hearing Sight Smell Taste Touch Contains: Mind (logic) Will Emotions Spiritual connection between our Spirit and Soul It is the incubator for our thoughts. Hebrews 4:12, Luke 8:11-15 Holy Spirit’s Holy of Holies Physical connection between the Body and Soul Man’s deadened, fallen spirit is made alive by receiving G-d’s life imparted through the power of the Holy Spirit. The eternal life promised in John 3:16 is the life of G-d which is put into man’s spirit by the Holy Spirit and this New Spirit life can never die.

New Christian without a Renewed Mind Spirit Spiritual Heart Soul Brain Body We give them “a piece of our mind!” The person is being unkind to us and based on a mind “conformed to this world” we “will” or choose to return anger - our justice! We “sow” anger into our spiritual heart causing it to harden or be “seared” to receiving the Holy Spirit’s voice (via our spirit) and anger starts growing in our heart The Holy Spirit is grieved and respecting the choice of “our will being done” - goes silent The brain converts the thoughts into signals to operate the body The senses detect someone talking to us The soul calculates a response by our mind (logic) and/or emotion “Something” tells us we should not tell them off. This is our conscience which is the “hidden man” or voice of our heart The Holy Spirit “knocks” on the door of our heart desiring to fill it with mercy for them & us The brain converts sight and sound into pictures and speech - they are being unkind

Cultural Christian with a hardened Heart Spirit Spiritual Heart Soul Brain Body We say a prayer of repentance from the depths of our heart We chose to repent and be cleansed from all unrighteousness (1 John 1:9) The Holy Spirit is overjoyed and floods our heart with mercy The brain converts the thoughts into signals to operate the body The senses have read this teaching The soul realizes that the mercy message is truth and is convicted of sin Our conscience by the Holy Spirit tells us we should repent (i.e., change our mind) and chose to be a “mercier” in His strength The Holy Spirit “knocks” on the door of our heart desiring to fill it with mercy The brain converts sight and sound into pictures and speech - we have been “judgers” We believe the truth that if we repent G-d will forgive us and cleanse us from all unrighteousness 1 John 1:9 Our heart is renewed again to be a heart of flesh (i.e., a heart sensitive to the voice of the Holy Spirit) Ezekiel 36:26,27 The Anointing -Mercy- floods us

Spiritual Christian with a Renewed Mind Spirit Spiritual Heart Soul Brain Body We ask the Lord to flood them with mercy to meet all of their needs! The person is being unkind to us but the renewed mind knows Y'shua has already paid for this sin, we listen to our conscience and “will” mercy! We “sow” mercy into our spiritual heart causing it to remain sensitive to receiving the Holy Spirit’s voice (via our spirit) and mercy starts growing and enlarging our spiritual heart The Holy Spirit is pleased with G-d’s will being done (i.e., mercy) and fills our heart with mercy The brain converts the thoughts into signals to operate the body The senses detect someone talking to us The soul calculates a response by our mind (logic) and/or emotion “Something” tells us we should not tell them off. This is our conscience which is the “hidden man” or voice of our heart The Holy Spirit “knocks” on the door of our heart desiring to fill it with mercy for them & us The brain converts sight and sound into pictures and speech - they are being unkind The Anointing -Mercy- floods us and them

When someone believes and gets saved (Romans 10:9, 10), the blood of Y'shua substitutes or atones for the sins of the soul; but not the body or spirit. (Lev. 17:11; Rom. 3:24; Eph. 2:13) G-d performs an operation on us (Colossians 2:11) and the Holy Spirit quickens (makes us alive unto G-d). The Holy Spirit comes into our heart (the spirit of man) but not into the soul. (Gal. 4:6; 2 Cor. 1:22, 5:5; Eph. 2:1-7) We are “born again” in our spirit BUT it is the soul that gets saved. The body of the “lost” and “saved” person is buried in the grave. The spirit goes back to G-d (Ecc. 12:7). The soul of the unsaved is lost to hell (Prov. 23:14). Eventually going into the lake of fire (Rev. 20:15). Holy Spirit

After the 1 st Death only one of these worlds will last forever. The Spirit World... SO WHAT IS THE 2 ND DEATH? The 2 nd Death takes place at the Great White Throne of G-d when the spirit and the soul separate.

“The Second Death” Rev. 2:11; 20:6, 14; 21:8 The second death is an ultimate and eternal separation from G-d. This condition is characterized as the second death because it follows physical death; it is designated as death because it is the terminal separation from the L-rd (Mt. 7:23; 25:41; 2 Thes. 1:9). “My soul thirsts for G-d, for the Living G-d” Psalms 42:2

Y'shua’ BODY was placed into the tomb. (Mt. 27:57-66; Mk. 15:42-47; Lk. 23:50-56; Jh. 19:38-42) Y'shua’ SOUL led “captivity captive”. (Ps. 16:10, 68:18; Acts 2:27; Eph. 4:8; 1 Pet. 3:18-20) Y'shua’ SPIRIT went before G-d and offered his blood without spot or wrinkle for acceptance. (2 Cor. 5:8; Heb. 9:11-15)

“Blessed and holy is he that hath part in the first resurrection: on such the second death hath no power…” Revelation 20:6a
