1 INTRODUCTION TO PERSONAL QFD
This set of slides is intended to support the development of a personal Quality Function Deployment (QFD) Please do not attempt to use these slides as part of a presentation until you have read and fully understood the relevant sections of ‘Managing by Design’, you know how each slide builds, and you are clear on the points you wish to make with them

2 MANAGEMENT OBJECTIVES
What do you want to result from your tenure? Growth in performance? Greater competency in your people? More systematic approaches to work? Greater customer influence? Increased staff satisfaction? Fulfilling corporate strategic expectations? …? Identify what you most want to achieve, and write each item down clearly and specifically on a separate sticky note.

3 THE AFFINITY DIAGRAM In silence:
Move one post-it note at a time to create clumps of similar achievements – ones that can be usefully grouped into one larger objective Don’t be held to the patterns and groups you first see, but allow them to evolve. Develop and split the groups so that they can be summarised as a clear and simple objective (eg: “Ensure customer satisfaction”) Summarise each of the groups into a clear objective for your role over the coming year(s)

4 WEIGHTING THE OBJECTIVES
Rank the objectives in relative order of importance Mark the highest ranked objective with an importance of 5 Rank each other objective relative to the first objective on a scale of 1-5

5 MANAGEMENT ACTIVITIES
How do (should) you currently spend your time? Review of diary based activities Review of calendar Activities required to support the objectives Things you feel you ought to be doing Things that you would like to do …? Write down each activity on a separate sticky note

6 THE AFFINITY DIAGRAM In silence:
Move one post-it note at a time to create clumps of similar or connected activities – ones that can be usefully grouped into a clear process Don’t be held to the patterns and groups you first see, but allow them to evolve. Develop and split the groups so that they can be summarised clearly as an unambiguous process (eg: “Coach direct reports”) Summarise each of the groups into a clear management process.

7 Contribution of process to objective
PERSONAL QFD Score each cell on the grid according to the importance of the process in delivering the objective. Processes for Role Objectives for Role Ranking Contribution of process to objective
