1 Today’s Agenda… Bellringer: What is heredity? How is it related to genetics? Review Dynamic Duos Notes on Heredity (PART 2)

2 Heredity Part 2 Study Pack #12

3 More about alleles… What are alleles? What is dominant?
What is recessive? Alleles are different forms of a gene Everyone has two because you have one from each parent

4 More about alleles… If you have a dominant allele, you will definitely have that trait If you have a recessive allele, you will only have that trait if there is not a dominant one too

5 More about alleles… Your parents have two alleles for every trait, because they each have two parents as well Each of them only pass one on to you These traits are passed on in the DNA in the sex cells Your traits depend on which alleles are passed on from your parents

6 More about alleles… If both of your parents pass on the same allele, you are purebred for that trait If each of your parents pass on different alleles, you are hybrid for that trait

7 Variations Because there are so many different combinations of traits parents can pass on to offspring this creates variations Variations are differences among organisms of the same species Consider how many variations are in the human species!!!

8 Genotype and Phenotype
Alleles are represented with letters The actual alleles that you are made up of is called your genotype Your genotype is written as two letters Ex. CC, cc, Cc

9 Genotype and Phenotype
Your phenotype is what you actually look like Ex. curly hair, straight hair

10 Activity… Genetics with a Smile
