HESI A2 ASSESSMENT TEST The HESI A2 is a timed, computerized test which usually takes 3-4 hours to complete. In order to apply to the nursing program, applicants must score 80% or higher on each of the required sections of the test: Reading Comprehension Grammar Vocabulary/General Knowledge Math Anatomy & Physiology In the ranking process, the Reading, Grammar, and Vocabulary/General Knowledge scores are averaged to produce an “English” score and points are awarded for that score. Points are also awarded separately for the math and anatomy/physiology sections. The Personality Profile and Learning Styles sections of the HESI A2 are also required but are not scored. Applicants should take the HESI A2 after completing the Associate Degree Nursing prerequisite courses.
18
ASSOCIATE DEGREE NURSING – MHS
The HESI A2 can be taken at any testing site. Applicants are responsible for securing their own testing appointment and should schedule their test several weeks prior to the application deadline if possible. HESI A2 scores may not be available for download from the Elsevier website for 2-3 days after testing. Do not assume that you will be able to obtain your score sheet on the day that you test. There is no limit on the number of testing attempts for the HESI A2. However, ALL FIVE REQUIRED SECTIONS of the test must be taken in each testing attempt and the score sheet submitted with your application must indicate a minimum score of 80 on each section to be valid. The Personality Profile and Learning Styles sections may be submitted from any previous testing attempt. The sample score sheet here shows the five required sections. HESI A2 scores are valid for two (2) years from testing date to the program application filing deadline date. A HESI A2 Study Guide is available at most bookstores. A HESI A2 Prep course is also offered by the El Centro College Continuing Education Division. Contact them at for more information.

Criminal Background Checks / Drug Screen FBI Fingerprinting Process MHS employees who are accepted to the Associate Degree Nursing program at MHS are not required to undergo a separate background check / drug screen as these screening have occurred at their facility as part of their hiring process. If an eligible family member of a MHS employee is accepted to the program, they will be required to complete these screenings after acceptance to the program and prior to their first clinical rotation. More information on the background check/drug screen requirement is available at the blue “Resources for Potential Applicants” link on our website at However, new MHS nursing students will be required to complete an FBI fingerprinting process as required by the Texas Board of Nursing. More information on this process is distributed after the student is accepted to the program.

Criminal Background Checks / Drug Screen IMPORTANT NOTE Students with a previous felony or misdemeanor are not prohibited from applying to a health occupations program. However, the result of the background check and drug screen after acceptance may prevent the student from attending a clinical rotation at our hospital sites, resulting in the student being dismissed from the program. Therefore, potential applicants should contact the Texas Board of Nursing prior to applying to the program to determine their eligibility to take the NCLEX-RN exam and be licensed to practice as an RN in the state of Texas. A Few Frequently Asked Questions…. How will my work hours affect my schedule while I’m enrolled in the Associate Degree Nursing program at MHS? The Associate Degree Nursing prerequisite and support classes are offered day, evening, weekend and some online schedules; therefore, a potential applicant has the flexibility to work before they apply to the Associate Degree Nursing program. After acceptance and starting the Associate Degree Nursing courses themselves, we understand that MHS employees are required to maintain their current employment status (full-time, part-time, PRN). Good time management skills in juggling study, class, work, and outside responsibilities is the key to being successful in the Associate Degree Nursing program. NOTE: MHS employees enrolled in the Associate Degree Nursing program at MHS are considered students during their clinical rotations and are identified as such wearing their El Centro College nursing uniforms. Students are not paid while doing their clinical rotations.

Frequently Asked Questions (cont.) I am going to apply for financial aid. May I use it for the Associate Degree Nursing program? Yes! To apply for financial aid, please see the guidelines on the El Centro website at Students should apply for financial aid well in advance of program application. See the Financial Aid Office in Building A at the main El Centro campus and visit the Health Sciences Division Office in Room P-713 at the Paramount Building for available scholarship information.

A Few Frequently Asked Questions…. Considering that selection to the Associate Degree Nursing program at MHS is a competitive process, may I submit an application packet for MHS selection and a separate application packet for the traditional nursing program at El Centro College during the same filing period? Yes. However, two separate application envelopes must be submitted to the Health Occupations Admissions Office: one addressed to MHS Nursing and the other to El Centro Nursing. It is only necessary to submit one set of physical exam, immunizations, CPR card, etc. to Castle Branch. A qualified applicant would be considered initially for the MHS program. If not selected for the MHS program, the qualified applicant may still be considered in the traditional applicant pool. Please note that application ranking still determines selection for both the MHS and traditional nursing programs. Submitting an application for the traditional program does not guarantee acceptance to the nursing program.
36
ASSOCIATE DEGREE NURSING – MHS
A Few Frequently Asked Questions…. Are there advancement opportunities for a graduate from the El Centro College Associate Degree Nursing program? Yes! Graduates are encouraged to pursue a Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing. Several colleges and universities have partnered with the El Centro College Associate Degree Nursing program to streamline the process for our graduates to complete a BSN program. These RN to BSN transition programs are months in length and are offered via online lecture courses. Beyond the BSN, masters level programs are available for advanced practice in specific nursing fields including nurse anesthetist, clinical nurse specialist, nursing education, and nurse practitioner in a variety of specialty areas. For more information on RN to BSN programs, masters and doctoral nursing programs in Texas, see the Texas Board of Nursing website at or contact Ms. Joan Becker at

Frequently Asked Questions (cont.) I earned a “C” in my English course several years ago. I would like to repeat it to earn a higher grade. Which grade will be used for my grade point average and will repeating the course count against my application? You may certainly repeat a course; the last grade earned will be the grade of record. (“W’s” or withdrawals from the course do not count in grade point average calculation.) Please note, however, that if you earn a grade of “D” or “F” in your second attempt in the course, THAT will be the grade of record and we will not honor the “C” you earned in your first attempt. Repeating a course to earn a higher grade does not count against your application as long as you complete the course with a “C” or higher on your last attempt.

ASSOCIATE DEGREE NURSING – MHS
Frequently Asked Questions (cont.) How do I calculate my grade point average (GPA)? A grade point average is calculated by dividing the number of total grade points earned in a group of courses by the total number of credit hours those courses are worth. For example, a letter grade earns so many grade points per credit hour for that course: A = 4 grade points X the number of credit hours for the course B = 3 grade points X the number of credit hours for the course C = 2 grade points X the number of credit hours for the course
39
ASSOCIATE DEGREE NURSING – MHS
Frequently Asked Questions (cont.) Here’s a sample of courses, grades earned, and the grade points for each: BIOL – A A = 4 grade points X 4 credit hours for the course = 16 grade points ENGL – B B = 3 grade points X 3 credit hours for the course = 9 grade points PSYC – C C = 2 grade points X 3 credit hours for the course = 6 grade points Add the grade points: = 31 grade points Add the number of credit hours: = 10 credit hours And finally, divide the number of grade points by the number of credit hours to calculate the cumulative grade point average on these three courses: 31 ÷ 10 = 3.10 GPA
