1 Sociology Bridging Task
There are three tasks to complete each on introduces you to one of the key theories we will look at in Sociology. Please remember the following: This is to prepare you for the hardest aspect of sociology so is supposed to be challenging if you are stuck please me or use the useful websites on the back page. It is essential you compete this on time as we will be using it on our first week in Sociology. It is up to you if you complete the challenge tasks they are if you are aiming for an A* grade. I am really excited to meet you all.

2 Task One Please buy a large A4 folder with 6 dividers. I have made a clear revision guide for each topic so you will not need to buy any additional text books.

3 Task Two (Functionalism)
Functionalists believe that society is like a body with every aspect of society performing an essential function which allows society to run smoothly the same as every organ being unique and essential for the body. They like society exactly as it is so they do not want anything to change. Please complete the task on the following page.

4 Below is an image of a feral child: 1) Search ‘Genie feral child’ on YouTube and find out more about her. 2) Answer the questions that surround her. What essential Functions did the family not perform? How would education at a young age have changed her life? How does the government protect children from experiencing harm like this? Challenge Task: Explain one statistic that show problems with the government, the family and the education system in the UK.

5 Task 3 Marxism The general idea of Marxism is that they think that the Capitalist society we are in now is unfair they want to overthrow this society to become communist. Use the information on the next two pages to help you answer the questions that follow.

6 Capitalism The working class do not own the means of production so have to sell their labour to make money. The capitalist class require these people to be complaint, work hard and accept inequality. The capitalist class is made up of the richest members of society it is anyone that own means of production this could be companies, factories, clothing lines or fast food joints.

7 Communism Cuba is a communist country there is no money every gets a weekly ration book where all the goods are shared equally. Key Facts Universal literacy and a good education for all with one teacher for every 10 Cuban students, compared with one per 15 in the United States. Excellent free healthcare system which attracts patients from the US and elsewhere for treatments ranging from drug dependency to melanomas, generating more than $40m in revenue. Infant mortality is lower than America's and Cuba has twice as many doctors per 1,000 patients as the US. There is very little serious crime than the rest of South America.

8 Questions Define capitalism and explain how communism is different to capitalism. Explain one reason that there is wealth inequality in capitalism. Explain one way that schools might prepare people to be good workers for capitalism. Research either the Soviet Union or Communist Cambodia and identify three things then went wrong under the communist regime. Explain one reason why crime may be lower in Communist Cuba. Challenge Question What about capitalist society has meant that have more millionaires. Why might communism be easier to exploit by governments than capitalism.

9 Task Four (Feminism) Click on the link below and read the Emma Watson speech. gender-equality-is-your-issue-too If your prefer you can watch the speech on You Tube simply search He for She. Answer the question on the following page.

10 Feminism Question Liberal feminism believes that gender equality will benefit men as well as men. Using the speech and your own knowledge explain two ways that gender equality will benefit men. Liberal Feminists believe that gender equality is becoming more equal. Identify three things that have improved for women since this advert was published. 3) Radical Feminists believe that men are the enemy women should live separately for men. From speech identify any harm on women that is largely caused by men. Challenge Question Difference Feminist thinks that the other feminists have ignored the diversity of women's experiences. Explain how Emma Watson’s speech may have ignored either lesbian women, Muslim women or transgender women.
