5 Collective A collective noun can be singular or plural without changing the spelling It names a group of persons, animals, or things. It is singular when the group it names acts as a single unit and is plural when the group it names acts as individuals with different perspectives or views. Can be followed by the word “of” usually

7 How can we tell whether a collective should be treated like one thing or like many things?
Can you call it an “it”? (does the group do it all together) Or does it make more sense to refer to them as a “they” or “them”? (do they do it all separately) The team (run/runs) during practice. The family (celebrate/celebrates) Christmas. The group of students (want/wants) to make a petition. A big flock of birds just flew overhead.
