1 Unit 1 Safety Power Mechanics

2 After viewing this unit, you should be able to:
Identify the locations of flammable containers within the shop. Identify the location and types of fire extinguisher with in the shop. Explain the proper procedure for use of select chemicals and tools in the shop. Explain the importance of the proper use of safety equipment in the shop.

3 SECTION 0 General safety

4 Lifting Safety Always lift with your legs and arms.
Use proper posture. NEVER lift with your back! This could cause serious injury. When in doubt, get help!

5 Compressed Air Always wear safety glasses
Never clean your clothes using compressed air. Particles or dust can be propelled into eyes and skin, causing blindness or serious injury. Never point an air tool or nozzle at others. Always hold onto the hose until air pressure is released.

6 Use of Power Tools Always unplug a power tool before adjusting the bit, blade,or power head. Make sure the plug is properly grounded. Never operate a power tool without safety glasses. Check to make sure all guards are in place and properly working. Get instructions or read the operating instructions before using.

THESE GUIDELINES HAVE BEEN DEVELOPED FOR THE SAFETY and well being OF THE STUDENTS ENROLLED IN AGRICULTURE EDUCATION CLASSES AT WOLF POINT HIGH SCHOOL. It is imperative that you as an individual, take steps to protect your personal health. If you minimize your risk of exposure now, you will reduce your chances in the loss of sight, hearing, life or limb, and decrease your chances of chemical poisoning that may cause allergies, disease, cancer, or premature death in your later years.

9 Protect yourself Wearing eye protection is required for all lab work. No exceptions! When using solvents and chemicals, wear proper protection, including gloves, glasses coveralls, and respirator if needed.

10 SECTION 1 EYE SAFETY

11 1) ALL STUDENTS ARE REQUIRED TO WEAR SAFETY GLASSES DURING LAB PARTS OF THE CLASS.
Must be Z87.1 Approved by instructor

12 SECTION 2 HEARING PROTECTION

13 Hearing Protection Hearing protection should be used in the following situations: Use of air tools. Exposure to running engines without mufflers. When in doubt, use hearing protection!

14 SECTION 3 HAND PROTECTION

15 4) STUDENTS USING POWER EQUIPMENT NEED TO FOLLOW THE LISTED GUIDELINES FOR THE SAFETY OF THEIR HANDS. A) ALL JEWELRY MUST BE REMOVED FROM THE HAND /WRIST AREA. ( BAGGY SWEATERS/ SWEATSHIRTS) C) LONG SLEEVE SHIRTS MUST BE ROLLED UP ABOVE THE ELBOW. D) ALL SAFETY GUARDS MUST REMAIN IN POSITION WHILE OPERATING A POWER TOOL.

16 SECTION 4 CHEMICAL STORAGE PROTECTION

17 Proper Ventilation Running engines produce CO or carbon monoxide.
Turn on the ventilation system at the start of lab. Lethal levels can accumulate in about 3 minutes. Other solvents produce toxic fumes as well. Some examples are parts cleaner, carb cleaner, gasoline, starting fluid, etc...

18 1) ALL FLAMMABLE CHEMICALS WILL BE STORED IN FIRE RATED CHEMICAL CABINETS.

19 Flammable containers Gasoline is stored in the following containers.
Note the color marking and self closing spout. Note the location for storage of flammable containers.

20 Flammable Waste Cans Any or all solvent or oil soaked rags need to be placed in these containers. These special waste cans are designed for fire containment. Oily rags can spontaneously combust.

21 Chemical Exposure 1)GLOVES WILL BE AVAILABLE FOR USE FOR THE HANDS WHEN THEY ARE TO BECOME IN DIRECT CONTACT WITH ANY TOXIC CHEMICALS SUCH AS STAINS , FINISHES, PAINTS, THINNER, CLEANERS, OILS, ETC.... FOLLOWING THE USE OF THE ABOVE CHEMICALS STUDENTS SHOULD RINSE THEIR HANDS WITH A THINNER IF NEEDED, AND WASH THEIR HANDS IMMEDIATELY WITH SOAP AND WATER TO REDUCE THE EFFECT IF ANY, OF THE CHEMICALS THEY MAY HAVE USED, THAT MAY BE PRESENT ON THEIR HANDS.

22 3) THE VAPORS FROM CHEMICALS WITH THE PRESENTS OF TEENAGERS, POSES AS A THREAT TO STUDENTS HEALTH, IF LARGE QUANTITIES OF VAPORS ARE INHALED INTO THE LUNGS. THIS COULD RESULT IN: DIZZINESS, HEADACHES, UNCONSCIOUSNESS, BRAIN DAMAGE OR EVEN DEATH AVOID BREATHING FUMES. IF LIGHT HEADEDNESS OCCURS, GET FRESH AIR and HELP.

23 Material Safety and Data Sheets (MSDS)
All chemicals in the shop have an MSDS sheet created for it. These sheets are in a binder located by the sink. If you have an accidental exposure to any chemical in the shop that needs medical attention, the MSDS sheet should accompany you to the hospital so the attending physician can properly treat your chemical exposure.

24 SECTION 5 Fire procedures

25 In case of a fire. Where is the nearest fire alarm to pull in case of an actual fire. What is your assigned escape route. Pull the alarm first, then get out. Don’t be a hero! Get out! Pulling the alarm will bring the fire department in less than 5 minutes. The average time a fire extinguisher lasts is about 45 seconds!!!

26 Fire Extinguishers Check to see where all fire extinguishers are located in the shop. Before using, make sure you know how to use the one you are about to grab. Identify the type of extinguisher as A, B or C, and will it work on the fire. Point the fire nozzle at the base or bottom of the flame. This is where the fire is burning the fuel. Do not use water to extinguish a liquid fuel fire, this will spread the fire.
