4. I. The Slave Trade & Impact
Many Africans died of starvation and disease before becoming slaves in the Americas or elsewhere.
African cities and towns did not have enough workers.
Family structures were destroyed because strong, healthy men were taken as slaves.

5. II. European Colonialism
Europe was interested in Africa because Africa could supply raw materials to Europe and create a new market to sell in.
Missionaries wanted to bring education and healthcare to Africa as well as convert them to Christianity.
They also taught Europeans ways of thinking and destroyed African traditions.

6. III. Impact of Colonial Rule
Europeans divided Africa without regard for their tribal, political, and social systems.
Europeans created conflict between ethnic groups.
1. An example of this is the 1994 Civil War between Hutu and Tutsi in Rwanda.
