2 Introduction The skeletal system is responsible for supporting the body and protecting vital organs. We are all born with 270 bones and eventually fuse together as we grow, leaving adults with 206 bones. The skeleton is subdivided into two divisions: the axial skeleton and the appendicular skeleton. These are the types of different bone. Long bone- arms, legs Short bone- fingers Irregular bone- vertebrae Sesamoid bone- patella Flat bone- skull Compact and spongy bone

3 What this system does? There are a variety of functions in bone that include: Support –the bones of the legs act as pillars to support the body trunk when we stand and the rib cage supports the thoracic wall. Protection –bones protect soft body organs. Movement –skeletal muscles, attached to bones by tendons, use the bone as levers to move the body and its parts. Storage –fat is stored in the internal cavities of bones. Bone serves as a storehouse for minerals, the most important of which are calcium and phosphorus. Blood cell formation –blood cell formation or hematopoiesis occurs within the marrow cavities of certain bones.

4 How many parts/organs does this system have and what are they?
Bones ,joints, cartilage, and ligaments. This system has two major part which are the appendicular and axial skeleton. The axial skeleton consists of the skull, vertebral column, and the bony thorax. Which provide support and protection. The appendicular skeleton consists of the upper and lower limbs and pectoral and pelvic girdles. Which gives a better range of motion to the body.

5 What does each part and organ do?
Bones, cartilage, joints and ligaments structure the framework of the body. The axial skeleton works as a supports and protects organs. The appendicular skeleton gives the body a better range of movement.

6 Where is this system located?
The skeletal system is throughout the body. The bodies structure is made up of the skeletal system.

7 What 5 new vocabulary words did we have that go with this system?
Ossification- A natural process of bone formation. Hyaline cartilage- a type of connective tissue composed of specialized cells in a translucent pearly blue matrix. Hyaline cartilage thinly covers the articulating ends of bones. Zygomatic bones- irregular bones. Hematopoiesis- production of all types of blood cells. Osseous- composed of bone.

8 What happens if this system fails?
If the system fails bones will: Weaken Easily fracture Hurt Unable to move some parts of the body

9 5 diseases/disorders that are associated with the system?
Osteoporosis-bones become lighter and easily fracture. Rickets- soften and weaken bones because of vitamin D deficiency. Tendonitis- inflation of the tendon most commonly caused by overuse. Scoliosis- abnormal curvature of the spine. Acromegaly- tissue grows longer than normal occurs when the body produces too much of the hormones that control growth.

10 What do you need to do to keep your system healthy?
Ways to keep the skeletal system healthy you can: Drink water Get plenty of vitamin D Eat/drink thing with high calcium Consume the right amount of vitamin A Exercise Get 8 hours of sleep Good posture Avoid smoking and drinking

11 Interesting/fun facts about this system?
All humans are born with 270 bones. As Adults we only have 206 bones: 80 axial & 126 appendicular. The skeleton begins to form early in fetal development as a flexible skeleton made of hyaline cartilage.
