1 The Presidency of T. Jefferson
Thomas Jefferson was born & raised in Virginia, served in state legislature, was governor, wrote the Declaration of Independence, was ambassador to France, Secretary of State ( ), & Vice-President ( ). --Jefferson is known as an “informal” president.

2 Jefferson’s Political Philosophy
--Favored states rights & the idea that states could nullify federal laws. ---He was a strict constructionist (literal interpretation of the Constitution) --favored smaller government and little intervention in daily life. --saw America as a nation of farmers.

3 Jefferson’s Domestic Policy
--Cut down cost of government whenever possible. --reduced the size of the army. --wanted to tear down Hamilton’s financial program. --ended the Alien & Sedition Acts.

4 Louisiana Purchase --Jefferson was concerned about access to the Mississippi River for farmers, which was controlled by Spain. Napoleon of France takes control of the river and charges high tolls for Americans Jefferson sends James Monroe & Robert Livingston to negotiate a purchase of the mouth of the river

5 Louisiana Purchase Because of trouble in Haiti, Napoleon gives up his dream of an American Empire and decides to sell the entire Louisiana Territory to the U.S. for $15 million. Jefferson reverses his strict construction and supports the purchase. It doubles the size of the young United States.
