PLENARIES 27-29 AUGUST 9 October 2019 Tuesday 27 August
9:30am – 11:00am How Do We Respond to the Climate Emergency? We are facing a global climate crisis. The impacts will be disproportionately felt by the people and communities we serve. It is a justice and inter-generational equity issue. The costs of inaction outweigh the costs of action and this plenary brings together leading speakers from across sectors to discuss the role we can play in the context of a climate emergency. 2:00pm – 3:30pm Why Human Rights Matter: The Possibility and Role of Human Rights Frameworks in Australia Why do human rights matter for the people and communities with whom we work? How can human rights frameworks hold government to account? Is it time for a National Charter of Rights? Join the President of the Australian Human Rights Commission and leading human rights lawyers as they reflect on these questions and inspire the sector to envisage its role in making rights real. Wednesday 28 August 9:00am – 10:30am Connecting with Community: Grassroots Activism, Movement Building for Change A central part of the identity and work of the community legal sector is our place in communities. In living our commitment to real and meaningful change, how can we empower people and communities at a grassroots level to new possibilities? Join us for a plenary that provides insights into how we can be part of active and vibrant communities.
